But does anyone know what really happened to the templars?

Seem to remember them coming to a very sticky end.

A sticky end for the Templars

As far as I recall the Templars were all burnt at at the stake for, amongst other things, baby eating and sodomy.

The historical Templar organisation was dissolved by the Pope. Over the centuries they became incredibly rich and powerful with their fingers in many pies (waves to Glom).

The first country in Europe that turned against them was France. Accusations were made against them that they were dabbling in the occult, their lands were seized by the French throne and many of their leading Knights put to death.

A lot of the remaining possessions of the Order were bequeathed by the Pope to the Knights Hospitaller, who went on to defend Christian Europe against the Ottomans' for many years to come.

It is thought by some that the Templars brought both Rosicrucianism and the Lodge into Europe, both movements being heavily influenced by Middle Eastern mysticism.

On a side note it's interesting that a roleplay guild chose a name that has no connection with the Arthurian period what so ever. Not a flame, a simple observation.

btw, why would a guild want to kill legion on their own? to take the fun from the other people?

The most likely reason the Templars where hunted down though , was that the european kings and noblemen , where jealoux of there possesions and power, so they thought hey lets make some false acusations, and then lay our sticky fingers on all there shiny stuff. And as the medival chatolic churce where a bunch of nutters, burning peopel for no bleeding reason what ever it worked just fine. No religious flaming intended , but burning peopel because someone told someone they gave them the "evul eye " dont strike me as even semi intelligent

The Holy Blood and The Holy Grail

There's also a theory that they were killed off cos they were harbouring the descendants of Jesus Christ who might have a claim to the thrones of Europe. Of course this is probably bull* but is documented in a very compelling way in the book "The Holy Blood and The Holy Grail" (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0099682419/ref=sr_aps_books_1_1/202-3824836-7643067). The Holy Grail thing may be the the link to the Arthurian Legends for the online guild.

As for burning people - the secular authorities at the time also burnt people, and quartered them, and broke them on the wheel and all sorts of other indignities so it's not as if the church had a monopoly on cruelty. If you thought that a witch had brought the plague to your village and that burning him\her would save the lives of your kids you might just go ahead and do it. I guess it's pretty much the same as the US bombing Afghanistan cos they think it will stop further terrorist attacks. And probably just as well-founded an idea (hehe now _theres_ something which might get me flamed:D).

The Knights Hospitaller, or the Order of St John, were not Templars. The Templar Order was founded to defend the Crusader states in Palestine. The Hospitallers were founded to provide medical facilities for the pilgrims on the long hard journey to the Holy Land. It was only when the Crusader states got into some disarray that the Hospitallers took up the sword.

After they were kicked out from the Holy Land the Hospitallers made Rhodes their base of operations. They carried out many acts of piracy on the growing Ottoman marine interests in the Med.

Suleiman waged war on Rhodes and they were granted the right to leave with their honour intact. After a few years bumming around Europe the King of Spain gifted the island of Malta to them, for them to act as its protectors.

Suleiman followed them to their new home, and though he sent the cream of his troops against them the Hospitallers remained in control of the island.

Could add lots (and lots!) to this -- save to say that Napoleon defeated their rag tag forces a century or so later. However the Hospitallers formed various medical foundations throughout the world. The most famous one being the Red Cross.

Ironic that the Cross which was infamous for the deaths of so many is now a symbol of hope.
