You may have had a duff chip sar. it happens. I had a dodgy 1.1ghz athy. it just kept freezing. I thought it was all sorts of (other) problems first, eg. mobo/power/drivers etc. Finally replaced the cpu and it's been rock stable since then.
I also had a Ahty 700 (slot). I never had one single problem with that chip.
Admittedly I am a bit of a AMD freak. I've had: K5-166, K6-233, K63d-333, K63d-450, Athy700, Ahty 1.1ghz. My K6-233 is still powering my spare computer and that is running Win2000 and merrily works for my better half.
In the old days I always got the K5/K6s cos I couldn't afford Intel chips. I now *could* get intel instead but the fact is, AMD Athlons are the better for value and performance.
