I.T Interview!

Got an interview for an I.T Job tomorrow. A 'Junior' role, would be good money but also great training opportunities (Being in an educationalisk(not a word I know) Environment).

Can't wait, I usually have a pretty good interview Tech, however what questions have you been asked in your I.T Based interviews (Support role) and how did you answer them?

making out your eager to learn because your intrested in whatever field the job is in is always good and stuff you have done in the past that might relate to what they are asking you to do.

saying you have 1000000+ posts on FH might not get it though!

No offence but the only qualification for these type of jobs is to check the monkey has a pulse.

The rest can be learned via beatings. Most of the time the people interviewing couldnt turn a pc on.

Gamah, this was mentioned in general a little while ago iirc - It's pretty much answer what you can, just don't BS your way through questions if you don't know the answers. Can't really say what you'll be asked.

I wasn't asking for interview tips, I've had quite a few in my time. I was asking common questions likely to be asked.

when i was interviewed by the council to become a techy i was asked stuff like "how does a server work" or "what would you do to reinstall windows" general things like that.

Usually I find it's either just the usual questions you'd get in any interview, or they'll want to check out your understanding of IT is what you said it was on the application. In the latter case they'll be either trying to ask obscure(ish) stuff to see if you know it, or asking how you'd go about a particular task (like the install windows one above).

Most places (big IT places anyway) these days seem to go for the competency based interview technique.

They should tell you if they are doing this though, youll get asked a pile of questions like:

"Can you think of a mistake you have made in your working career (or life), what effects that mistake had and how you learnt from it"

I've just done one recently for a network admin position, it was horrible.

the questions can be random but i've got some tips:

1. never ever say rebuild a machine, especially a server. this should always be a last resort
2. display knowledge of resources, even things as simple as googling an error message and using the MS support site
3. If you don't know about a certain technology that they ask you about, don't bullshit it. say that you don't know about it but its something that you want to learn about

1 The amount if time teching a PC imo should be weighed up against the time it takes to rebuild it, The last time the pc was rebuild should also be factored in, and of course the problem itself. 10 mins should be enough to fix an issue, else blow it away. It's good for the new guys to tech something to death but time is a factor that some people don't seem to consider.

Servers are another story.
