Its me again, your local useless twat.

I rebooted my pc last night and after turning it back on it took me to the screen saying I never closed it properly and asks me if I want to start in normal mode/safe mode/safe with networking or last known good configuration. Whichever option I select the screen either freezes there and then, or goes to a black screen and never loads. I've no idea why this has happened and I've gone into BIO's and tried fail safe configurations and no luck. I can't get past this screen. I've put my XP CD in and attempted a system restore but it takes me to a prompt where I have the ability to enter a load of commands like attrib, batch, bootfix, etc...but I'm not sure if any of them are any use. I really don't want to have to format and/or reinstall windows AGAIN because its just so annoying. My old broken HD is currently off being repaired and I purchased a new one a week ago which was seemed to be ok. I have been getting some blue screens of death and such in the last few days, before this latest crash though.

Yours, in desperation

Nah. There was a guy and EVERY post he made was a question. I can't remember who it was though, maybe it was you :p
Windows kept doing this to me, and I have no idea why. So I installed Linux. I thought it was my hard drive being bitchy, but it has been fine so far.

Hehe, I remember that guy. He was my idol.

Well I fixed it be repairing windows. Took fucking ages, but I'm in now and my files etc seem to be intact. Only problem now is that my network settings were reset, and I'm unable to connect to the internet. I've got a connection called 1349 (which is a norwegian black metal band :() and it doesn't send or recieves any packets. If I attempt to create a new connection it seems to allow me to do so, yet a new connection doesn't appear, and I'm stuck with the old one still.

that's doze putting IP on your firewire interface. right-click on my computer, go to properties, go to hardware and see if your network interfaces are recognised by the system.

better still, right click on network neighborhood, properties, and see what nics are actually running.

I don't know how this keeps happening to you Mob matey. you're second only to my mother regarding your skill in breaking pootas :)

Well under the "network" tab in Hardware it says 1394 Net Adaptor, and it seems to all be working fine. When I try to "repair" a connection, or obtain the IP details I get the error message

"Windows could not repair the problem because the following cannot be completed - Failed to query TCP/IP settings. Cannot proceed. :(

I've rebooted and cycled my Modem, and also switched my router off for a period. This computer is connected to the same line and is working fine. Something changes when I repaired Windows.:(

unless you're using a very cool network at home you won't be using your firewire interface's possible networking capabilities. so disable it, ie the 1394 interface. if you do *not* see any other interfaces in the properties of the icon "my network places" something is quite wrong and you'll possibly have to (re)install drivers, or go back to a system save point or whatever. windows is entirely and utterly crap imo, in every possible way, so good luck </unix elitist>

Yeah before it broke I just left the 1394 shit to its own thing, and had a separate connection which was my proper one, and it worked fine. I don't know what the hell the 1394 one is. I just tried to uninstall it and then my computer wouldn't respond to my network adapter at all, and I was unable to even attempt to set a new connection up.

Basically when I go to set a new connection up, it all seems to work fine. Then I press okay, and nothing happens. Or it asks me to reboot, and I come back to windows and the only network icon there is still the 1394 one. It didn't used to be this way. I've tried rolling back but because I restored windows it says there is no available rollback point. I've tried updating the drivers but I've got the latest ones from the disc I got with my mobo, and obviously I can't connect to the internet to get the latest drivers. I can disable the 1394 connection but really it doesn't do anything anyway.

Really a loss here. I've been close to tears a few times. :( I must've traumatized a calculator in my youth...because technology is out to destroy me.

that is really strange matey. it's almost as if the other interfaces have been disabled in the BIOS or summat. if you right-click on my computer, go to properties and then hardware, you don't see any yellow questionmarks or exclaimation marks? I am guessing there must be some, because your hardware just isn't getting detected properly.

Hmm there are no errors or exclaimations. Since repairing windows the computers actually been running sweet, aside from this error. I'm in the BIO's now. Should I look out for something? Before attempting to restore Windows I fiddled with some options, so I might've altered something.

hmm. go through the BIOS gently and look for things that are set to "disabled" or off". don't worry, the BIOS will show them to you without too much trouble. just slowly work yourself through the tabs without changing anything till you find something that resembles networking. it may be labled "realtec" or "marvall" or "nVidia" or words to that effect and it will prolly be in your onboard options, as I'm guessing that your nics are built in to your mobo.

don't change anything until you're fairly sure you're on to it, and then change only one setting!!! very important. also remember what it was you changed, what from and what to. write it down. this is so you can change it back if things go pear shaped. boot back into windows and see if things are different. if not keep at it untill all is well again! you'll muddle through laddie, don't fass yourself :)

Jackanackanory! It works. I had disabled the NV network thing in the BIO's whilst setting it to failsafe in an attempt to make Windows work at 4am last night. Before almost having a breakdown. :(

Thanks alot dude. :) Now to download Lost!
