  • 64k is not broadband.
  • From what I hear the ping is very similar to the 512k service, a tad slower perhaps. About 50/60ms
  • Well, depends. Some 64k customers have been having problems, but theoretically you should get 6.4k/sec. Same speed as single channel iSDN
  • Sure you can connect all 3 PCs together. You will either need:

    a) 4 network cards - 1 four port hub - 3 rj45 cables.

    or

    b) 3 network cards - cable router (150 quid) - 3 rj45 cables

When you work out which you can afford, post in here and we'll help further :)

You want to share 64k between three users? That would be like all having a 28.8k modem. Remember that the k is kilobits, as with a 56k modem. 64k is not broadband, it's only slightly faster than a modem, with the advantage of a perminent connection.

Why don't you get 512k?

To be honest, if I had the chance I would snap it up. It aint that expensive really.

The 64k service offers the same pings as the 512k...remember kiddies ping is latency not bandwidth. Just the dl speeds are lower as you might of figured.

Hmm not sure that you'll like sharing 64k.

I'd personally go with 512k....porn streaming ;)

To be honest, you're fucking crazy if you do get the 64k service. Call NTL **now** and upgrade to the 512 service.
  • entry level packages up to 64 Kbps - option 2
Pay a monthly subscription of £14.99 which includes the rental of a telephone line + subscription to our entry-level broadband Internet service*.
  • hi-speed packages up to 512 Kbps - option 3
Pay a monthly subscription of £19.99 and purchase an ntl-approved cable modem for a one-off charge of £149, this is in addition to your existing ntl package****.

Basically, it appears that on the 64k service you *have* to buy the modem yourself, meaning in the long run you could pay just £5 a month more, for 512k. I don't think anybody with an iota of sense wouldn't take it

Not really, it's a digital connection and hence much more potent and stable than dialup. However, it will still be totally unusable as soon as one of them starts downloading

It is actually 2 computers i want to run off the cable modem, not 3. Sorry.

However i really dont have a clue how i am goin to go about connecting them. Do i just need 2 network cards?

OH, an when i can afford it im goin to upgrade to the 512, but for the moment im only really interested in gettin a low ping.

Cheers all for all yer help

You'll need something like this:

http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?prid=20&grid=5

and two network cards.

You put both network cards in and link them to the Cable/dsl router which will be connected to your cable modem, this way it shares the connection and knows which computer requested what bit of information etc.

Or

You can get three network cards and stick two in one PC(1) and one in the other(2). The first PC(1) would use one network card to connect to the cable modem and the other one to connect to the second Computer(2). In computer 1 you would then need a bit of software that does the same job as the Cable/DSL router. Something like Spoon proxy which can be found here http://www.pi-soft.com/

humm

Is on Telewest blueyonder.. Cable modem and gets a ping of 17 - 30 normally!
Get a proper modem not 64K

This only costs me 33 a month for 24/7 net! :)

You wont look back!

I personally would go with the 512K option, and hey 'I Did'

I didn't buy the modem mind you

Modem Cost = £149
Modem Rental per month £5.00

I went with the £5.00 rental - Total cost £24.99 per month
with pings of between 16-30 + pretty awesome download speeds for downloading additional maps etc etc.

The reason I went for renting the modem was because I had a second phone line which was costing me £5.00 per month, so I cancelled it and carried on paying the £5.00 for the modem - so it is only really costing me an additional £19.99 per month

Go with the better option. price difference between the 64K and 512K is about £5.00 - Mmmmmmm I would go with the better option.

Just use windowze internet connection sharing - works fine for me - both my PC's work fine and ping 15-30 to all the BW servers.

Tribes 2 rocks on a low ping connection :)

64 k (a la ISDN) sharing is crap for anything but irc and / or web surfing.

I think this is cos of the way my home network is setup (im the gateway) but if im playing cs (or any other online game)if someone loads up a webpage it will spanner out the game connection until they have finished loading the webby.

Just bear this in mind if you have chosen the 64k cable (madness :p)
