You do realise its the retailer and individual who serves you that is liabel for a fine or jail time for selling to an underage person?
I thought the age ratings on games were a purely optional thing that most retailers were happy to go along with rather than something that was legally enforced.

Guess something changed, or my memory is just bollocks ;)

There's two different age rating systems on games. ERSB is recommended and others are BBFC stylee with the red 18 on it. Those are legally enforceable or something.

We have to use ERSB at work too. Family retailer and all that, so 16+ rated ERSB games we will treat the same as BBFC rated ones.

As for San Andreas, I don't beleive anyone under 18 should be playing it. It really is not suitable for them.

Agreed, I spect it pissed off a lot of parents who decided that it's a computer game and thus the rating can be ignored.

I wouldn't say that. The game deserves to carry an 18 rating, due to content, but I'd say the game is appropriate for ages of 16+.

When I was younger, my parents didn't approve of me watching 18 certificated films very much, and avoided it. However, despite GTA's original 18 certificate once I showed my dad the demo he laughed and said it would be fine. We went out and got it at a local store, owner knowing it was for me.

Parents tend to be less fussy about computer game violence or age rating simply because of it's detatched nature away from reality. When you're playing a game you know you're playing a game, and everything is happening as an effect of that game. In a film you are exposed to real pseudoviolence, which is intentionally realised.

Up to a £5000 fine and 6 months jail sentence is the maximum penalty.

Fair enough.

Only thing I could remember was the optional stuff brought in after the Daily Mail 80-year-old whiners brigade got all upset over some appallingly shit Sega CD game many years ago.

Bonus points for anyone remembering the name of that pile of poo :p

There is the PEGI games rating system as well now. Can't remember if it supercedes ERSB or works along side it.

Hi guys

The BBFC is specific to the UK and, as has been stated, carries the most weight of any standard and is supported by various Acts of Parliament. PEGI is a pan-European system which builds on existing standards, in consultation with various groups, to rate aspects such as language, discrimination, drugs, fear, sex, violence. Like the ESRB (seemingly more American-orientated) I don't think these are directly enforcable in terms of criminal sanctions, but they work with the industry to promote the standards in the hope of achieving their endgame of informing the public and protecting minors.

Personally, I was ID'ed when buying San Andreas and don't particularly mind. As with all age/content ratings, you'll get some mature minors which are fairly desensitised to it, and others above age limits which really shouldn't be playing it, but regardless I think some system should exist and I don't mind taking a little more time when purchasing something just to ensure the system works (or attempts to). Having chatted with the salesperson it seems this title in particular had been drummed into them to check, even on fear of their jobs. Press coverage with the GTA titles also makes them an exception. The original 2D GTA, which probably seems tame next to San Andreas, was actually publicised by Max Clifford by creating a press frenzy about it's content. Any publciity is good publicity :)

As for the graphics, they are a bit of a mixed bag. In one respect, such as model detail, they are indeed aging but this is largely due to it's PS2 origins. On the other hand, the latest version supports real-time shadows and reflections, and when you consider what the engine has to do (render an entire 'living' city) it's pretty impressive, a task which is made more demanding the greater the draw distance extends. There seems to be a bug right now which causes the special FX option to cause unnecessary performance hits on some systems, but switching it to 'Low' seems to resolve this without much impact on the overall look of the game (mirror detail is perhaps the most notable change). As for the sound, I haven't come across any problems, but most likely there may be a patch, although Rockstar/Take Two have been in the past unwilling to fix all but the most serious of issues.

Kind Regards

Got bored of GTA:Sa after two weeks on the ps2. Glad I sold it. Will not be wasting my money on it again.

I sort of suffered this, I just seemed to stop playing it and so far still haven't gone back.

Yeah I found it a bit annoying too - if you leave the mouse alone, the camera does follow the car but I find it easier just to use the mouse to keep looking around now.

Go into Mouse Settings and put Steer with Mouse "ON".

Anyone else having problems with sound when you save a game?
Keep getting a random sound looping continuously, only way to stop it is to reload the save game.

Only played it a bit but it's great fun :)

Was that the default behaviour for Vice City? I did have a hard time getting to grips with the driving/mouse action on GTA:SA for the first hour or so, but now it feels quite natural.

I think the turn with keys/look with mouse while driving system is great. I'm also quite impressed at how much is going on at any given moment, and how far into the distance one can look. It triggered a few fond rememberances of the older Jedi Knight games.
On the 'theme' side, I was quite worried from the start and have ended up liking the game, and the style. Just as long as I keep treating this as a game, I'll enjoy it.

I'm not sure about the dance revolution bits though :)
