I have a hardon for 3/4 time music.

So lets list all the good 3/4 time stuff okay!! 6/8 or whatever is fine also, and pretty much any multiple of 3 really. Just fuck off with 4/4 already jesus.

Anyhow lately I have been listening to The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute, which has rather a lot of very good examples of 3/4 time. Others off the top of my head:
Beatles - Norwegian Wood
Sheryl Crow - We Do What We Can
The Sundays - a good portion of the album Static and Silence
Badly Drawn Boy - Once Around the Block
Radiohead - How to Disappear Completely, Subterranean Homesick Alien, The Tourist, (Nice Dream), Sulk

Obviously there's a lot of blues and jazz with this kind of time signature (such as Tom Waits - The Heart of Saturday Night, which is currently sitting in winamp's queue) but I'm not going to list those - however any suggestions for awesome slow 3/4 blues would be orgasmic. Go go go.

(Also this is a much better thread than the other music thread which is rubbish.)

Money is pretty famous is being the most mainstream-penetrating example of 7/4 time though. Still, great song. I find the middle/end of the first track of Frances the Mute harder to work out really, and still haven't.
I've also always meant to listen to Gymnopedies as I know bits and pieces of it, but have never heard the full thing. Thankz.

Perhaps this should be widened to include all songs with unusual time signatures, though it's mainly 3/4 that really tickles my testes.

Edit: on the 'unusual time signatures' note, I guess Time Out and Time Further Out really ought to be mentioned post-haste.

4/4 for one bar, 3/4 for the next bar, repeat.

Tom - it can be written in that form or in 3/4 - 4/4 form. Note how they have loads of semi quavers when writing in x/8 form? That can be a pain to read, particularly when we are dealing with (in this case) quite a complex rhythm.

It also only shows page 1, which gets as far as the end of the intro... once you get into the verse it is simple 3/4 OR 6/8 for the verse until the next fill section between verses.

Well I've just tried playing it and given up. I can do the right hand no problem, and even the 'donk donk.....donk donk.....donk donk.... donkdonkdonkdonk...' on the left hand. As soon as I try and play the right notes on the left hand, it all goes to pot

This is where I had an advantage from the start (it was a bit of a loaded question)... I have grade 8 in theory of music and trumpet, I have spent over 10 years in my youth in major choirs, I have played music in bands and orchestras ranging from Haydn's trumpet concerto to the Theme from the A team, I also play bass guitar and piano, and I learnt to play Golden Brown on the piano when it first came out

Yeah I mentioned Time Out (on which Take Five appears) a ways back; it's a great album. Mars: Bringer of War is 5/4 also by the way.

This example is probably the best way of putting people off 3/4 time forever. Try the sample of "The Widow" here, instead.
