Some fog, and the airways grind to a halt (and i can't see my sister at xmas, hence the rant).

Some snow, and the motorways and schools shut down.

Some rain, and the motorways grind to a halt because all the useless cnuts go at half the speed limit.

Some wind, and the bridges ban high sided vehicles and caravans (maybe not such a bad thing).

We seem to be completely inept at running anything smoothly in this fucking useless cheese dick of a country as soon as the weather gets a bit "ooooh". Spend more tax on the roads and decent transport services and not billions on Iraq & nuclear subs. Cocks.

afaik it's not the taking off and landing that's the problem, it's the moving the planes around on the taxiways between the gates and the runway. Can see why they're not keen to have lots of planes moving around near each other on the ground in thick fog.

on weather, my pet gripe is the effects of anything at all on the performance of trains as I don't have a car atm. every single weather condition there is seems to be detrimental. cold, wet, sun, seasons...they're all bad for the poor trains :/

Most 'major' airports are run at near maximum capacity the whole time. As soon as the fog comes down, they have to depend on instrument take-off and landing - that means doubling the spacing between aircraft, and therefore halving the available slots. They cancel the short-haul flights, since it gives the airlines more flexibility and ensures that the aircraft are where they are meant to be, when the weather improves.

To be honest, no other nation's airports can cope with fog either. I've spent many a miserable hour at Schiphol, for example, in the fog waiting for a flight home, when all the short-haul stuff has been cancelled. Little consolation, I appreciate...

You dont think they were just clearing the backlog then? There is a priority system though - International flights override domestic ones - it may upset folk but it makes sense.

well i dont know where your sis lives, but just because its not foggy there doesnt mean its not foggy at some point, somewhere, which would cause danger to the planes.

really, what do you want air traffic control to do? the job is uber stressful as it is without also having to worry about being able to actually see whats happening.

would you rather all planes took off in dangerous conditions and ATC just hoped there would be no probs?

I don't give a fuck, I don't get paid to worry about it, I don't know how the system works and i'm sure there are infinite reasons to cancel flights for eternity if need be. You're trying to reason with me and i'm a selfish ignorant bastarrd. It's just the last in a long line of constant travel upsets for me in the past two weeks.

It took me 1hr 40 mins to get 10 miles down the M8 to Edinburgh one morning, because a bunch of useless scottish twats slowed to 10 mph to rubber neck a broken down lorry. Traffic was backed up to fife eventually. So, no problem! get the train! But they cancelled the trains because of a "problem on the line". So i still can't make my 10 mile journey, and the bus would have been no use for obvious reasons.

We can't even get basic travel nailed down in this country / scotland.

The reason why international flights take priority over domestic ones is that if you're already in the damn country you could drive/cycle/bus/car/train/taxi or any other number of ways to get to your destination. While I appreciate flying london to scotland is easier than getting a train, or driving, just because the planes stop taking off does by no means make a destination unreachable.

they may well be able to take off but they wont be able to land in the destination airport.

in my work we get travel updates every couple of hours (i got bored of reading them after a while tbh) by the looks of it it wont clear in the short term. though that is the update from about 9am yesterday morning.

I drove the 7 hours from Brum to Dundee on thursday afternoon. Bollocks to flying. It was seriously painless and easy.

There was some heavy traffic around Stoke but I think that was motorists rubber necking Trem's naked dance antics at the side of the motorway.
