Solar panels in northern Europe is the biggest joke of the century, how the fuck they keep a straight face when selling them to you.
A full roof system on a cloudy day in England will be lucky to knock out 100 watts, it's cloudy most of the time.
100 watts would just about charge a laptop.

If only fusion didn't have such a terrible stigma attached to it mainly due to a bunch of Soviet techs who decided to test a safety feature by turning off all 20 other safeguards.

You mean fission. Fusion doesn't have any stigma (quite the reverse) but no-one's made it work yet.

As for your main argument, yes, direct electrical transmission generally makes the most sense for powering buildings, cities etc. but its more complex for transport. Batteries are heavy, slow to recharge (the killer flaw), lose efficiency really quickly especially at anything other than optimum conditions (EV cars are useless in cold countries), and they scale really badly because batteries use rare earths like lithium. It doesn't mean batteries are a waste of time, but they shouldn't be the only option, which is where hydrogen comes in. Yes it costs energy to crack hydrogen, but it costs energy to refine and transport petrol, and it hasn't stopped us using that for the last 100 years. Difference is, hydrogen is pretty much an infinite renewable.

Pressurised air cars are the ones for me, very benign except for the possibility of a cylinder failure.

Yeah - they drastically underplay the dangers of a pressure tank failure on that page - if it vented into the car all occupants are dead and anyone nearby permanently deafened - nice :p

The other problem with pressurised air is its bloody useless - even at the sort of pressures they mentioned it wont get you far unless your 'car' is a bycycle with big tank on the back.
