Hybrid drives

Looking to upgrade my lappys piddling 5400rpm (I think) 250Gb drive to a larger 750 or 1TB 7200rpm drive. My bro who works in business IT reccomends hybrid drives for speed. While im defo getting a 7200rpm drive im unsure if forking out more for less space is worth it for the speed speed increase hybrid offers. However my laptop is in the rare position of having a secondary hard drive bay, so I guess the old one can go in there for general storage that does not need fast access. Also im getting a 1Tb external drive for backup purposes so 500Gb should be enough for a small linux partition and a windows 7 partition for gaming right?

Any advice or exp with this sort of thing would be appreciated.

Also its worth noting im limited to SATA II.
