Apparently there is not enough system memory for the Gingerbread OS and Sense. The were never going to re write sense so there is not much they can do unless they offer it without it.

It is bullshit mate, they have had beta versions for testing with 3 that are running gingerbread and sense. Loads of custom roms are running on the phone with both sense and gingerbread, infact the Wildfire can do it with less system memory. This is all about selling more phones, getting people off last years top end phone and onto this years slightly better and higher priced top end phone.

Lack of updates are the reason I switched to the Nexus S.

HTC either announces or leaks the info that they're working on the next version of Android, then months later you get the official announcement that they've decided to cancel the update. However in the weeks/months you've been waiting for it, HTC will have released other phones with updated versions, and the modding community has probably already hacked together a version which does the same thing.

To be fair though, most of the manufacturers suck badly (article is a bit old) and HTC has probably done the most updates.

It does sound like an excuse but this is nothing new with HTC they always update the latest phone everything else is pot luck. They have been the same since i was buying the WinMo phones from them.

I am the same both of my personal Android Phones have been Nexus's.

This subsection of the Desire forums on XDA-Developers says HTC are talking a crock of shit.
Desire Android Development - xda-developers

What's more, this particular ROM not only has Gingerbread with Sense 2.1, it also has elements of Sense 3.0 included as well (from the HTC Sensation). It also doesn't need an EXT partition on the SD card, making it more "noob friendly" to flash the ROM.
{Updated}[ROM] HiApk sensefun GSv1.1[Android2.3.3/Sense2.1+3.0]No Partition - xda-developers

I've still got a year to go with my phone so I'm going to be hitting it with a custom ROM in the near future. I *like* Sense. I've been using it since my old XDA Orbit 2 and WinMo6.

Just saw a post on HTC's Facebook page, they are U-turning Gingerbread is coming to Desires now. After all the backlash they have had over the last day I am not surprised.
