How would you approach this?

Say I found a really nice place to rent for university, which I will start in September. I am 90% sure i'll make my university offer and if the viewing is good, I would like to stay there for atleast a year - maybe the full duration depending on how things go.

2 problems however: firstly, I am not guaranteed to meet my offer and if I don't get my grades, that's it - they don't offer clearing or anything less than AABB. Secondly, obviously I don't want to live in the place till sept but I want to get a place sorted asap (before all the returning students flush out all the good places).

How would you do this if you were in my shoes? I've found a really nice place I'd like to view and I was considering offering the deposit upfront if I like it when viewing and then saying to the guy 'look I'm a long term secure renting chap, if you hold it till september I will offer you my missus as part exchange and my undying love.' The right way to go?

live in halls for first year its the only time you'll ever get to live that experience and from talking to people who didnt the only thing they all have in common is missing out on it!

if thats not an option... i wouldn't sign anything until you have a confirmation o_O

Aye I'm weary of signing anything but I just don't want to get my results; found out I got in and find fk all choice and only expensive accommodation left!

I've seen some tasty flats about but I can't help but ponder how long they'll stay available!

where you hoping to go? :p

usually halls are cheaper, but err i suppose that depends on where you are living, if you were in Hull for example i could recommend where to live or who to contact regarding reasonably priced housing anytime of year.

also alot of second/third/fourth years will probably have sorted housing out by now seeing as they can start moving in august/september and first years dont normally start until october or late sept

I stayed at home unfortunatley, wish I hsd moved to a city and lived in the halls. Does seem to be the best option from what ive seen and heard. Its also the usual route based on what orm has said about present students getting the homes.

So reckon I should leave it till august 20th; find out whether I've got in then quickly sort it all out? Theoretically I have until 1st October when my course starts; I just want to make sure I'm settled.

I may start looking now then, bookmark various appealing places and see how they are doing on august 20th.

P.S - for personal reasons, halls isn't an option :)

tbh 95% of 2nd and third years will have sorted out their accommodation months ago, its only other first years you'll be fighting it out with.

Dunno what your personal reasons are but you really should go in to Halls.

Well you could leave it but everyone above 1st year will already be sorting places out at the moment.

I'd always recommend halls for first year at Uni otherwise you do miss out on a large slice of Uni life. Also you tend to find that it's people who you live with in the 1st year who'll live with in the 2nd and 3rd as well.

Which Uni btw?

Definately go to halls, i can't really think of any personal reasons not to?

Returning students will have sorted out their accodation last academic year, meaning all the good accomodation will be gone. However if you go on facebook groups for your uni or any forums etc related to you university you will most likely find people looking for a housemate to fill the house they've found.

But seriously, living in halls is one of the major aspects of university and generally where you meet most of your mates. If i hadnt done it then i wouldnt know some of my bestest buddies.

Halls or nothing tbh. Is the place you're looking at moving into a 1/2 bedroom place? If so you'll have to be uber sociable to find a group of friends in your first year. For me, halls was the best experience of uni (especially in 1st year where you do fuck all work).

One bedroom place - halls, as I said, is not viable!

Going to wait till aug. 20th I think - bookmarking the best places over the course of the next month ready to re-view on the 20th!

Aye - and studio flats too.

I'm guessing most 2nd/3rd years go for 3-4-5 bedroom houses they all share? is that why i'm seeing such an insane number of flats to rent?

oO why would you want to live alone at university? You get retarded amounts of free time, i think I would have gone insane if i didnt live with people. Although to be fair in halls there is the chance of living with unpleasant types.

It's personal enough I don't want to get into it on the forums Mega :)

Anywho - I think you guys have answered or rather doused my flames of concern so thanks! Just checked rightmove.co.uk & there is an extraordinary number of flats in the surrounding area so i think I'll be fine tbh.

Thanks!

Bugz i can't stress enough if there's any way you can get over your "personal issues" for the first year at the very least, do it whatever it takes. Uni is going to be a pretty miserable place for you if you live on your own in the first year.

A studio flat is like 600 per month rent in some places, thats if you can even find one.

How do you expect to afford that? Plus if you only want one bed room, well thats whats in the halls: a bed, in a room, with a sink. Use the sink to piss, shit out the window, and clean with the water from the tap.

If you guys decide to battle out some kind of OT-style arguments amongst yourselves perhaps but I've had my concerns answered by some lovely people on the first page so I'll be washing my hands of any updates! :)

Bugz, first make sure you're moving, then get a place.

Don't be 90% sure, be a 100% sure.

Push comes to shove, there's always some couch to crash on for a day or two if you can't get a place.

You don't want to rent something and then go through the hassle to let it go.

I don't know much about the UK renting system, so can't offer any solid advice. Regarding halls or not, it's your life, do what you bloody well want :p

unless you hae a chronic dislike of human interaction i would say that whatever your personal issues you should live in halls. not only is it a major part of university life (impromptu sacking off lectures and spending an afternoon on the lash), it may help you 'get over' whatever personal issues you may have. push yourself!

Halls!!!! And then you will move into a place with friends you have met in your first year.

If you having a gf is the reason that's shit, even if you had three nipples, a ock and a vagina you should still move into halls.

ask them if its possible to cancel the signing if u dont get in. just tell them the story and hope they have a heart.

i mean, if the place is that attractive it shouldn't be hard for them to get it rent anyway.

Not being in halls wasn't in the least anti-social for me. I made a few friends that lived in them and met everyone else through hanging out with them. When 95% of freshers live in halls it's not hard to end up knowing a lot of them and wandering over to hang out with whoever's around.

Plus I knew loads of 2nd and 3rd years from living in a shared house in a student area and had a more comfortable place to live.
