Does anyone have any ideas on how to Un-RAID a HDD whilst keeping the other working in a RAID 1 config ?

One HDD has failed and I intend to replace it. However I still want to get some kind of use out of the faulty one. I cannot even run maxtor diagnostics s/w on it, in a attempt to repair it. So I want to un-RAID it.

The only way I know of is by deleting the array and creating the array again with the new replacement and existing working HDD, however I will have to re-install everything, which I'd like to avoid if possible.

The HDD in question is a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 80GB 6Y080MO SATA 8MB Cache.

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks in advance.

And more importantly - which SATA controller? Intel on ICH5R/6R, SIL3112/3114 or Promise?

might be worth continually retrying the fawlty RAID before you give up. ime, faulty HDs will occasionally start up ok...its worth a try...it might mean you can backup or ghost your data

The serial ATA/150 controller is integrated in VT8237 which supports RAID 0 or RAID 1. M/B is a MSI KT6 Delta MS-6590 (v 2.0) with VIA KT600 and VT8237.

The O/S is Windows XP Pro SP2.

The HDD has failed before the same way. It boots up and recognises inconsistencies. After which it duplicates the array but when it gets to about 80% fatal errors occur on the HDD in question.

I deleted the array and started again the last time. However it only worked OK for about a couple of months. I now want to replace the HDD.
