How to spec?

Just got my hand on a copy. Yay!! :D

Been creating characters for an hour or two... just to see what fits me best.

But I really can't decide! This is terrible... the choice is just too hard. One thing I learned is that it's probably worthwhile to have at least 1 weapon specialty, even as a mage. I think.

After reading the posts on this board, I'm thinking along the lines of an thief / assasin, with light armor, short or long blade, a bow, lockpicking, stealth, mysticism and alteration or illusion... and is speechcraft worth it:confused:

Or a pur sang mage might do the trick for me... not sure though.

Please, please! Post you expeciences and speccing tips with the characters you played.

If it possible to have the best of both magic and stealth:confused: And maybe try to get in a bit of combat abiblity or medium / heavy armor:confused:
Or is that the way to make a gimped character:confused:

Any advice, tips, tricks and how to spec is very much appreciated!!! Thanx!

The Nightblade combines magic and stealth beautifully. The schools of Magic you learn are the ones to either a) make yourself harder to spot/quieter b) all purpose ones to make a mission that much easier (water walk has to be used fairly often) or c) buffs :)
You might look at a Nightblade and think due to the lack of armour, shield skill he'd be a poor fighter but for those first 30 seconds where you're powered up to the heavens, very little can stop you.

My main specs are Sneak and Short Blade atm. I'm spending a lot of time on Marksmanship too (one shot kills with a bow make me feel warm inside).

It'd seem that most players are finding the game more fun by playing one of the sneakier classes :) I remember the first assassin mission I did, I got seen so had a bounty of ooh, 1000g or so. It was great fun trying to sneak past everyone to get out without a guard catching me ;)

The paralysing sword that was mentioned is a main plot item I think. Doing missions for The Blades is the main plot line, within the first few missions you'll get a Dwemer Jinksword which, although low damage, paralyzes them. Get in the habit of hitting an enemy with it then cycling to the next weapon and doing lots of damage. Switch back, paralyse again and repeat til dead.

Other tips? Work on your skills as you go along. Most skills need to be actively used to go up. So sneaking along when there's no one around won't put the skill up. However, if you find a nice place with a few hidey walls and guards walking past.. Sneak out of the wall, get as close as you can to the guard; move a bit back (or to the side) if he sees you, then carry on. Your sneak skill zooms up by doing this :)

Will post more when it's no longer 10:30 ;)

Yeah! :D

You are convincing me! My god, I haven't been so enthousiastic about a game since... hell, since I was a kid.

Is a bow worth it:confused: Or would you spend your specialization on destruction for the ranged attacks:confused:
Or no range attacks at all:confused:

And what about speechcraft:confused:

Well, I know I should just play the fecking game and find out. but I'm not one to play games twice... so I want a perfect character to start with...
And by the way, creating the charachter, spamming on this forum, and thinking about it is fun. So don't flame me for that, ok? Just ignore me. ;)

Keep the advice coming!

I play a pure melee assassin that uses alchemy to create the magic effects I need. True I do have a long spell list but can't cast most of them. I only got them so I can go to the enchanter to make new weapons/devices.

I do use the spells of recall , mark and the divine intervention of the mystic line and that is about it.

My character is a dark elf assassin with the tower star sign so I can detect enchanted , objects secret doors and mobs with a ability called beggars nose. And my other ability is to open any lock with a L/R of up to 50 once per day.
Being a dark elf I am resistant to fire which helps alot, and the ancestor gaurdian is a awsome 60 sec shield spell.

My sneak skill is now maxed out at 100 and the backstabbing critical hits can take down a creature in one or two hits, depending on level of opponent.

I gone light armour with a short blade as my main weapon stay , with some archery that is now starting to rise and do some nice damage with the bonemold bow I have.

I used the assassin template from the game for my skills and atributes if this is any help.

Not sure if I want to turn this character into a vampire yet though, I may wait and do that on another one latter on.

Speech Craft is quite good but i would go for another skill, esp if you were spending GP to train in it, it basically gets rid of the need to spend money bribeing.

EG

there is one thief mission in Balmora where you have to get a key to some blokes bedroom.

i tried to pickpocket the house owner but my sneak skill was only 40 then so i kept getting caught.

after that i went to find the house cleaner and after about 10 attempts i managed to pickpocket the key sucesfully.

If my sneak skill had been bad i could have bribed him or if my speechcraft had been upto scratch i could have admired him then asked for it.

Speechcraft will be helpful but if you are a good enough sneak you can get whatever you want anyway. Besides pickpocketing is more fun than talking.

1 tip to help you get information when you do want it. When you speak to someone there is a bar which shows your popularity with them. At the beggining your popularity is pretty low with everyone and people wont want to tell you where things are etc if you ask them.

Get good clothes and also buy lots of Bug Musk Potion as soon as you see some in a pawnbrokers or enchanters shop. Bug musk increases your popularity rateing for a short time.

TBH the allout fighter people are pretty dull, combat is just a case of clicking the mouse which becomes a chore after a bit. I would deffo go with a Thief or assasin or a Mage.

Spells are where this game really shines, if you can get good at spellmaking you will have a lot of fun.

On the subject of bows, I wish I'd started speccing earlier in it. It's a useful skill to have.

If there's a group of 4 enemies you can sneak and shoot one of them (with your bow), he'll come for you and chances are the other 3 wont. :)

Cool! Nice feedback guys. :D

I just made a character with the following specs:

Primairy skills:
Light Armor
Spear
Sneak
Marksman
Enchanting

Secondairy:
Alteration
Illusion
Mystisicm
Security
Conjuration

As birth sign I took the Lady because of the +50 pts. bonus, 25 to endurance, 25 to personality.
The character is strong in Agility and Intelligence. The race a Briton, for the extra magica.
As you can see I didn't fully specialize in one style, I tried to get the best of both...
Its basically and nightblade with enchanting and conjuration. I read enchanting was hard, but really handy. I didn't spec in athlethics or acrobathics, because they will increase gradually when you run, jump, swim and fall. And I figure I can compensate for the shorter jump with levilation or another usefull spell. I took the spear because it's 2-handed, and endurance based. Conjuration because of the levilation-summon combo.

Now that raises my next question: can you backstab with a spear:confused:

What do you think of this template, guys:confused: Any comments:confused:

I'm still at the beginning, I can restart and build another character if this one isn't viable... ;)

I found that combat was harder than with a fully specced fighter (tha figures), but to also harder that a fully agility specced thief or assasin. I hope this character proves it's usefullness later in the game.

Ok, enough boring yadibla from me. HEY! Wake up!

Again, any feedback is welcome! Keep it coming!

Greets to y'all,

PhazeD

What is it youre going for with that character?
If its ultimate sneakiness then I`d suggest short blade instead of spear and unarmoured instead of light armour (the weight of your clothing, especially your boots affects your Sneak).

Its probably better to specialise in one or two things rather than trying to get a Jack of all trades. Illusion is reasonably important for a serious thief/assassin. Then again, so is Mysticism.

The best advice is probably just to play it and see how it goes :) You can always redo the game again with a completely different character if you feel like it.

Have fun!

Heeg I've just started playing this, was initially WAY put off by the fact that it feels just like a single player MMORPG, but have found that putting on some ambient, non-game music makes playing it bearable, and sometimes, uh, fun.
Don't really agree with the "you can always just redo the game again with a completely different character" since you'll have completed at least a few quests already and the replay value isn't much (at least so far as the main plotline goes. I guess the different guilds work alright for replaying). Unless you're just retrying from the start, in which case you won't have gotten much of a feel for your character anyway.
Uhm so yeah I've just been playing a hand-made stealth class. I'm kinda hoping that, later, with lots of money, I'll be able to buy lots of training for skills I'm not currently using but might like to, such as heavy armour and enchantment and stuff. On enchanting - does anyone know of a good source for empty soul gems? I'm fairly far into the game, but haven't been able to find any decent places to buy them. Have found a few lying around, but not enough. I WANT CONSTANT EFFECT ENCHANTMENTS DAMMIT!!!

Balmora Mages guild upstairs has a couple of Grand Soul Gems which hold golden saint souls (good enuf for constant effect) or you could get Azura's star which is a reuseable soul gem!

I made the mistake of making a Heavy figher / priest hybrid

I leveled insanely fast

At lvl 22 I could kill anything in 3 hits, using my awesome Sword of the North (Hey, a 60dmg magical attack!!!)

Avoid making athletic a primary skill, as it will make you level incredibly fast (sprint everywhere)

I alwasy found that having the "restore" spell line extremely handy. I mean EXTREMELY handy

Nothing is worse than being stuck somewhere becaue you are encumbered because someone drained your strength

And to get speech craft up, find some random geeza and just hammer the compliment button.

It may go "slightly" wrong, but you should be able to improve loads. And you only loose your rep with 1 guy.

Don't make the mistake I did and complete the expansion pack before the main game, I got the expansion and played it all the way through having not got more than half way through the main game story line. I then went and finished the main quest and found it far too easy. I wasn't even wowed by the end of game items because I already had such decent kit. Twas a shame as I don't think the devil hurt me at all :(.
I know you're supposed to do the main quest first (in normal games) but Tribunal says you can do it at any time in the game of Morrowind and I got swept away in the more high powered quests of tribunal and never thought about how easy the rest of the game would become.
My character got too powerful and I think it cost me an enjoyable end to the game.

I didn't do the main quest till I was Lvl 33, I was to busy becoming head of the Mages guild and Getting high in the Redoran house and Ending slavery,

But once I got the Ice Blade of Monarch my long blade skill went up to 100 very fast, by the time I faced Dagoth Ur I was Lvl 40 with all my skills above 60. with the exepction of Sneak which was 45

Most games become boring when cheating, thats the piont of playing games if u cheat u are getting rid of tense situations, that leave your heart puffing hard.

Like when u first start off and u get to lvl 10 and u think u can take on the whole world, then u spend the rest of the time running for your life, working your way through a game without cheating, makes it so much enjoyable becaus eu get a high sense of achievement. Unlike cheating where all u have to do is tell the computer how powerful u want to be.
