Using a router that's going through a switch?

Trying to help my mom here.

She's been trying to setup a local network between her stationary PC and her laptop, but for some reason she has issues with the rights to change settings to connect a second PC.

Anyone that can make a "for dummies" guide for this?

The laptop uses Win7 and the stationary uses Win XP. Could this be the reason?

You're not really giving much info. What has been tried? What isn't working?

If they're getting their IP addresses from the router, then they're already on the same network.

Windows 7 is completely compatible with Windows XP.

Well it was all the info she gave me.

The link Gimmly posted seems to be helping, so i can safely stop giving a damn now.

If she still can't get it to work i'l wrangle some more info out of her.

No idea why she asked me for help in the first place, i've never ever done that sort of thing before...
