How much notice do you have to give ?

Things are changing at work, and we are getting new terms of employment, how much notice do you have to give if you want to quit ?

This new contract says 3 months !

I could understand this length for a managers position or one that could be hard to replace, but im just a tech.

Three months is fairly standard in 'professional' type jobs. I believe my contract is six months notice. But on the plus side it's also six months notice the other way round, if they find they no longer require my services.

It's all negotiable, 1 month is standard but it can be 3 months 6 months even. If you handed your notice in saying you need to finish on xx/xx/xxxx which is giving 1 months notice there`s very little chance they`d argue though since they know all you'd do is toss it off for 3 months if they didn`t let you go.

Currently, one week, but then I'm a contractor.

My opinion is that as long as the time you have to give them notice is the same as the time you have to be given notice, it's not bad.

Depends how you feel about the job, really.

If you need a revised contract of employment, I would get it sorted ASAP.

Its however long it says in your current contract. They can't force you to work 3 months notice until you have signed your new contract.
(If you have already signed your new contract then you're out of luck I'm afraid.)

Its redundancy or new contract (in new location)

I'm no employment lawyer, but if you want to go, and hand in resignation, they can't then make you redundant can they? (assuming that its best to quit than be made redundant) I'd go for the 3 months tbh.

3 months isn't that unusual, for higher level professional staff anyway.

That said a 3 month notice period is pretty hellish to work out .. that's why they give you them

Your can waive the notice period though if you do resign later on, but only if both parties agree, i.e. your employer will let you go that soon.

By resigning you don't get redundancy pay. A lot depends on the time scales thou.

1-4 years service 1 month
5-9 years service 3 months
10+ years service 6 months

It is really for your benifit too with redundancy ect.

I have just been made redundant and basically how it works is as of the day your notice starts you can walk out and they have to pay you for the 3 months of your notice it is up to them to tempt you to stay till the end with a loyalty bonus or something. If you quit and are not worried about shafting them or getting a good letter of reference you can just stop going to work the pain here can come from them not releasing you till your time is over thus stopping you getting a new job. But from a chat i had with my old HR lady if you give fair notice which is atleast half your notice there is not alot they can do to you so your new contract is really 6 weeks notice if you quit. This is all from my old company so sorry if its wrong

3 months seems fairly reasonable. When I was given my contract as a tech (being student and all) I had 1 month notice. So I suppose 3 months when you work fulltime seems fair

As an interim or a temp, you don't have to give notice at all. You can bugger of whenever you want.
