I would love a new PC but they are so expensive if you cannot build your own and i cannot justify spending the money when only a few good games come out a year for it.

WarHammer may change my mind thou :)

hmm, for myself, I use my computer as an all-round workstation, meaning I do administrative tasks on it using word and excel, test work stuff on it with vmWare, I draw on it with a free gfx proggy as a hobby, and I play games on it, with the latter obv costing the most regarding cpu and gfx card.
My computer is a Q6600 at 3GHZ, 4gb ram, 8800GTS and some other stuff and cost me something like 600 pounds at the time of purchase. Because I do not play games on it exclusively I justify the cost to myself in the all-round way I use it, compared to say, a PS3, which to me is a very expensive gaming platform with a handy built-in blue ray player.

Man. I've not read the thread but I get fucked off by this question!

I've been hearing exactly the same thing since the early 90's. Every time a new console sells the same idiotic question is asked - when the answer is soooo simple:

As long as they can make money out of it :)

I think this is the crux of the matter. Consoles are very popular but I expect more homes have PCs than consoles and if you produce games for the right demographic theres big money to be made.

I have all the consoles but I spend more time on my PC than the quick fix games I play on PS3/360/wii. I think thats because they offer depth, particularly the RTS games that don't transfer well to console controllers.

At the end of the day gaming is a hobby and people should spend what they want/can afford on it. I can afford £6-700 every couple of years so have no problem with it as i get a great deal of pleasure out of it.

Well, on the topic, i can only say this:

As long as there's a media that is used atleast to some extenct, there will be many forms of entertainment made for it.

So in short, i don't think computer games will die before games die or computers die.
