How do players get such low ping times?

I have started playing Couter Strick this week, what a game!
I see most players have ping times of around 60-80. Can someone tell me how to get these low times. I'm using Freeserve's Offpeak and weekend suftime connect and I always get a ping of about 208. I live in London and connect with a 56k modem.

They're most likely using a cable or ADSL connection to the net...ask your telephone supplier about what interent services they can provide and maybe one day you too could have a sub-100 ping...

I always find that greasing up the phoneline and modem (vaseline is the best) makes everything a bit quicker. Pouring some fat into the phone socket really speeds things up no doubt (it helps the digital / anolouge connection ratio triple in quickness, due to the electron per inch of fat ratio). I can actually get 40-50 pings on my 33.6 modem

Try it, cos its works a treat

Hey Shabazz!!

I thought I was the only one that knew that secret!?

I find that polyunsaturated oils (Flora for instance) work best because they have more conductivity.

I like to marinade my modem-Phone line for about 1 week before I use it.

Sound advice! but don't forget to ensure your modem cable isn't looped or twisted. Data has to slow down to get around the corners.

Oil trick didn't work

Thanks for the advice on the modem tweaks. I tried the oil trick in the phone socket but without much success. I used extra virgin olive oil (I had cheaper polyunsaturated but I thought, what the hell!) but my connection speeds have a dropped substantially as a result. I used to connect at 46Kb/sec now I'm lucky to get above 10Kb/sec, is this normal? Ping speeds are about the same. I noticed that voice quality had also degraded badly and I have to listen very carefully to what the caller is saying. I also tryed a knob of butter but no change.

I didn't put Vaseline on the cables because I didn’t have any and I can't imagine it would make any real difference. Also, how did you marinate your modem? With chicken grease or vegetable oil?

Thanks, RP
