how do magnets work

No i know they do work and we ( the human race ) have loads of equations to explain the effects of magnets and magnatism.
but how do they work.

2 permanent magnets are on a table, they start to move towards each other.

I almost understood it.

What always intriqued me about magnetism is how a seemingly inert lump of iron can exert such a powerful effect on other bits of iron.

And just WHAT is it made of anyway, this mysterious force?
