Turns out a few others may have been infected.

the last thing my home virusscanner picked up was something called IRC.flood It was in my doze system recovery dir somewhere. No idea what it was but Mcafee zapped it right away.

I've not had any of the recent virii

Makes me wanna unplug my router and connect straight to the net without a firewall!

Or I could just sit here like Cyril Sneer and laugh.

Neither do I, and I said it up there, so I win.

Can I have all that money from your other thread?

As a totally untechnical person I have a question for all the techy type people. With things like tv email, x-box live etc won't some clever person with too much time on their hands soon be able to write viruses for them sort of systems?

Yes. I wouldn't confirm whether or not this has happened yet.

Closed systems like these are more secure, since there is a smaller number of working bits, the network is closed off, and the technical specs are harder to get hold of. While technically possible, Windows makes a much easier target.

yes. there are also viri that effect mobile phones I believe. the thing you have to realise is the fact that it's not really worth a cod0r's while to do it. a very average visual basic knowhow can net you x number of windows based computers world wide. a slightly more specialist coder may be able to take out y xboxen/gheycubes/whatever. as long as x is a magnitude larger (thus more probable) than y you won't have to worry as much. plus reaching the virii top 10 list nets you heavy cred with your spotty leetor friends yo.
what I can imagine happening is the servers that the consoles will be connecting to becoming a target, not the console itself. still, and xbox has a hard drive doesn't it? hmm that could inspire the fey and reckless :)

Here's a mail from the head of networking at Luton Uni.

"Just for interest sake, since midnight we have quarantined 2630 virus emails coming in the University - about 240 an hour! The vast majority are the Sobig virus in the news this morning."

Not one person infected. Aren't I a good Virus Officer :)

Not at all. In fact I find it quite amazing that any virus propagates. All that is needed is some common sense and a regulary updated virus checker. I mean, how hard can it be.
