Anyone know any decent hotels in Southampton?

We're possibly heading down on Saturday for an overnight stay, wifeys brother is finishing his leg of the round the world clipper yacht race thingy and is due into Southampton on sats so we were going to go down and give him a welcome back (might get some good photo ops as well).

Never been down that way before and need a decent cheapish family room, obviously know the premier/holiday inn types will all be down there but wondered if there was a nice local alternative :)

Botley Grange is a 20 minute drive outside of the city in a nice area and a really really nice hotel and near gohans house for an extra bonus

ETAP :D 3 beds in a room for like a tenner, win

In all seriousness Botley park hotel is proper luxury (about 4 miles out to the East of the city) or there is the de vere in the city centre, both of those are pricey tho, other wise there's loads of premier inns etc, jurys inn is probably in the middle of the chain hotels and the posh hotels

The DeVere Grand Harbour http://www.devere-hotels.co.uk/hotel-lodges/locations/grand-harbour.html is central although it's it's right by West Quay, a ring road but is close to the old city. The Southampton Park http://www.southamptonparkhotel.com/ is near the Civic Centre so quite central and the Hilton http://www.hilton.co.uk/southampton is at the top of the Avenue near the Chilworth roundabout and is about 3 miles out of the central area. The Balmer Lawn http://www.balmerlawnhotel.com/ is nice but that's about 15 miles out in the Forest.

The White Star Tavern http://www.whitestartavern.co.uk/home/rooms/rooms-tariff.php in Oxford Street is pretty central and is very close to the marinas etc.

Forget Southampton. You'll get bummed by sailors.
Go to Bournemouth.

they have no sailors there? or just not the "18 inches up against the back door" kind?

The sailors in Bournemouth are gentlemen. They at least buy you dinner beforehand.
So I've been told.

Bournemouth is the third gayest place in the country after Brighton and Manchester.
