Righto doodz, time to recommend me some horror movies. Watched REC the other day and fuck me was that awesome, so now I fancy watching some more that are in the same league as that.

Anyone who tells me to watch Saw/Hostel can go diaf btw.

Isn't that the one where black shit starts leaking through the ceiling? Saw the trailer a while back, but heard it was more of a thriller over a horror.

Just watched the Jap trailer, looked a shit load better than the american trailer I've seen. Might have to give this a watch, cheers.

And Zede, The Thing is one my list to watch soon aswell :)

Exactly. While i have not seen the American version, i can assume it relies more on shocking the audience while the jap version is much much more darker and gloomier and richer in atmosphere.

I really should learn to make a list of the decent ones I see but for now, try out 'frontieres'/'frontiers', a french horror film but don't look up any sort of synopsis before you watch it else it'll ruin it (well kind of... I'm one of these people who detest anything in the slightest being ruined before watching a film). It's a bit more shock value then rec but still well worth a watch for some absolutely astonishing acting in parts and a darn good horror in general.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - Tobe Hooper
Halloween- John Carpenter
The Silence of the Lambs- Jonathan Demme
The Thing - as already mentioned
Psycho - Alfred Hitchcock (more of a suspense but still amazing)
An American werewolf in London- John Landis
Night of the living dead- George Romero
The Wicker Man- Robin Hardy
The Shining- Stanley Kubrick

Some of my favourites

Not all horrors but great movies

Wasn't horizon event "horror"? Sci-fi style horror but still.

Haven't managed to watch it yet :D

The Orphanage can be kinda jumpy in places, in Spanish with english subtitles from the maker of Pan's Labyrinth.

Event Horizon is indeed a horror, and pretty damn scary too. can't think of any other scary films, these days they are weak to get them a 15 certificate. Plenty of oldies about, though again none of them would get an 18 rating these days. A mate went to see mirrors the other day and said that was good, planning on seeing it myself at the weekend.

Slightly OT and rather unsociable but I find a good horror game far more scary than any movie.

That´s true... but there are way too few out there. :/
I remember playing Thief: Dark Project 1 (hardly a horror game) in the dark with headphones and crapped my pants when I bumped into one of those zombies while walking around a corner. :)

righty then:

hellraiser (1,2 and 3 but only if your desperate)
Evil Dead (definately 1,2, and 3)
american werewolf in london is an absolute cracker
dog soldiers is an amazing film really cheap special efects make it look like one of the old time horrors.
not really a horror but the lost boys is a great vampire movie...as is the film Vamp with Grace Jones (a couple of great examples of 80s cinimania)

a couple of movies that are made up of several smaller episodes are Body bags (i think john carpenter) great film, Tales from the dark side, black cat is another one that has been strongly recommended and tales from the crypt (I quite liked the tales from the crypt: bordello of blood, very very funny)

Deathwatch - Andy Serkis was the scariest thing!
The Ring - but only the Japanese version
The Grudge - I've only seen the american version but it was scawy :(

I don't watch that many horrors.

Theres a pretty decent rule when it comes to american horror films. If it was done in another language first, watch that one instead.

Seriously, I used to hate subtitles until a few years back when I realised they don't detract from a story so long as you can read at a decent pace and they're generally far far better done without that generic american element plastered over the top of them.

I have no idea why American people (not all but most...can't argue with box office stats) don't watch films from anywhere but America. Most storylines from hollywood are so damn obvious now it's getting beyond a joke.

Seconded Kirennia. I don't bother watching ANY american remakes of foreign films. Just like with REC, I've seen a few clips of Quarantine and it's absolutely laughable. All the 'scare' moment are in the exact same place, they just look and are performed a lot worse. Tbh I've barely watched any American (and maybe British) films lately, just due to the fact world cinema at the moment is a bucket load better (I watched Old Boy on Friday, definately worth the watch for people into phychological mystery/thriller movies).

Cheers guys. Think the first few I'm going to have a look at are The Ring, Frontier(s) and The Thing, since I've seen all the ones Dudley posted ;). Keep the suggestions coming though.

I just watched Dark Water (jap) again, that movie is not good for my psyche. Going to give "The Mist" a watch now.

dont have to watch it to know if cho suggests it its shit. did you see his latest music thread? Either Amp or Laddey stole his persona (probably Amp of late! - however Laddey is a chav, this is intriguing! I shall ponder this for a while) or he has lost all credability.

The Cottage is nice to see because it's a decent horror/comedy from England for once :) I really liked it but I know others didn't. Just don't watch it expecting to get scared at any point, it's not that type of film.

The Omen. Classic supernatural chiller. The sequel was ok, but the final instalment in the trilogy was pants.

Might do myself an Alien trilogy marathon tonight. I am not partying, instead I am going to Alton Towers tomorrow with my family to see the fireworks. We had such an awesome time last time we did it and my dad randomly bought us all season tickets. Gotta use 'em!
