JAIPUR — In a shocking incident a daughter-in-law has been arrested for keeping her 85-year-old widow mother-in-law confined in inhuman conditions and causing her physical and mental harm for the past 18 years.

The tale of untold miseries being inflicted on Pawan Kumari, the hapless widow, came to light on Saturday when a private TV channel telecast horrible pictures of woman being confined in a kennel shaped tin shed in the posh Malviya Nagar locality of Jaipur.

What is more shocking is that the widow hails from a jeweller’s family and has four well-off sons, who ‘allowed’ their mother to be treated like an animal.

Pictures of the widow were beamed across the TV screens, the police and many women’s organisations rushed to the spot and rescued the widow. The police immediately arrested the daughter-in-law Vidya Jain (53) while her husband Prakash Jain, a rich businessman, could not be traced as he was out of Jaipur.

After taken to a rehabilitation home for the aged, the widow narrated her tale of torture, which she was undergoing since her husband died about 18 years ago.

The physical and mental torture over the years had taken such a heavy toll on the old and fragile woman that it took a while for her to identify herself and narrated her story to the police.

Pawan Kumari told the police that she was kept in a tin shed measuring 5x3 feet, which was so small that she could not even stand. The roof of tin sheet has been put up a few days ago, the widow said, adding that she was kept locked up all the time and was allowed out for half an hour daily for taking bath and going to toilet. She had to wash her clothes and clean the plush house driveway and was beaten by the daughter-in-law if she could not follow her instructions properly. She was given leftover food to eat.

Many neighbours confirmed that the victim was telling the truth. A neighbour said the couple kept their mother in inhuman conditions and was treated like an animal." Another neighbour added: “Bruises and scratch marks on her body shows that the woman was beaten up regularly.” Superintendent of Police V.K. Singh said daughter-in-law Vidya Jain had been arrested for torturing her mother-in-law and causing her physically and mental harm.

Well... really don´t know what "views" you expect.
Horrible, yes indeed.

Sad thing is, that things like this are happening each and every day. There was a girl in Germany, who died from starvation. She was arrested in her room, equipped with just an old matress, with no lights and electrical traps to avoid any attempts to escape. After living in those conditions for years, she finally died. The Police said that she even tried to eat parts of the carpet.

Disgraceful, hope the daughter in law is locked away for a very long time :twak:

How can people do that? There was that TV programme on a few week ago with the sick man and he locked that women up for years, based on a true story afaik

gah thats bloody horrible, its that thing i hate of someone being cruel to someone/thing that cant defend themselves, but im having trouble deciding which is worse, that daughter for inflicting the torture or the neighbours for turning a blind eye, imo both as bad as eachother.

Lots of very weird people about. On the one hand for everyone to be the same wouldn't work at all. After all the only ones shown on the big wide screen are exaggerations of everyone's natural traits. Psychopaths - sociopaths - or if you go the other way - angelic healers or carers - exaggerations of a part of all of us. Why are these episodes so shocking? Because we all know that deep down each and everyone of us is capable of it if brought up a certain way or if we decide to harbour misguided thoughts. Does this make such people acceptable? No, far from it. Once such people have gone down such a road they have to accept the consequences. An eye of an eye. I have no compunction about advocating the death penalty when someone kills another. In this instance the punishment should fit the crime. Stick the witch in the same bloody building and make her live exactly the same way for a period of time. There could be mitigating circumstances but I doubt it.

True. But I don't hurt other people - only myself - mentally. Nah my 'illness' has given me an insight into people's makeup - everyone's makeup. We very complex creatures. Maybe complex is the wrong word. Human beings are 'rich'. A massive array of feelings and thoughts that make each one of us different. Wonderful really cept some are disturbed. Thank goodness that the extremely disturbed are very few and far between.
