Gonna disagree with marc a little bit.

I went to Vegas last May for a wedding. Stayed in the Luxor, to be honest the rooms are tired now, the towers maybe different but i didn't get a chance to go in there. We had a group of 4 couples in the Luxor, some got 'upgrades' some didn't and they all said the rooms were tired.

This was our 'normal' room, bed very comfy aircon was good, but noisey, we complained and got another identical room with a quiet aircon unit.

The wedding couple stayed in the Mandalay bay next door, those rooms were a little more expensive but much much nicer, "The Hotel" rooms were also amazing. The Luxor pool is ok, clean but not overly interesting. The Mandalay has a 'ocean pool' with waves etc and an imported beach. We nabbed some Mandalay door keys and got in one day to 'The beach' and it was very nice.

The Encore is also a really nice place but is super expensive, well worth a trip tho and a meal in the main restaurant, we didn't get a chance to eat there (others did) but there is a nice area in The Wynn to have some pics taken if you feel like it, indoor arboretum of sorts.

Take a trip up the tower in Ballys, the view from the platform at the top is great, this is the outside of said place...

Do take the time to have a wander up the strip for the evening shows outside of some of the hotels. We didn't get to the the Mirage volcano or the Pirates at TI due to high winds :(. Bellagio fountains are awesome, i recommend standing either right in the middle at the front, or on the balcony at the back, so you are viewing them from behind. Otherwise if you can be up the tower opposite in Ballys at the right time, although it gets very busy at this time for that exact reason :)

Just walking through the casinos is an experience in itself. New York New York is a good walk around, Ceasers and Venetian aswell. We had dinner in Ceasers on our final night, nice italian in the shopping area with a nice fountain at the back, was excellent food.

The wedding was conducted off strip, but we all returned to the Venetian for the reception, again excellent food in there, and a nice gondola ride through the shops :p

I've never worked out what people see in Las Vegas; I think its an awful place.
I'm of this opinion now. Its a laugh to go around and see the American excess, have some fun. But after 6 nights we were all a bit tired of the place and wanted to get out.

The streets have alot of beggers, people handing out prostitute cards and drunk people having shouting matches with each other.

People say get cabs everywhere, during the day this is somewhat true, its quicker. But after dark its quicker to walk than cab around due to insane traffic.

Yeah so long as you avoid the drunks :)

The cops are fairly hot on it so they pick them up pretty quickly

When I was in NYC with the wife we walked everywhere day and night, I've felt more uneasy in Croydon on numerous occasions than I did in any part of NYC.

I agree, I walked back from the cinema off of Times Sq at midnight and I felt very safe

I stayed in Harlem for a week a few years back. It was fun and definitely not fucking safe. Thought I'd hate NYC as I don't generally like touristy cities but it was fairly epic.

Manhattanites generally say you're perfectly safe so long as you stay south of 100th Street and avoid the Port Authority at night. Personally the only place in the US I've ever felt a bit nervous was driving a minivan through Compton because my genius navigator said he knew a shortcut from the Airport to our hotel. Visited much dodgier places than anywhere in the US though.

This, when I took my son to NYC for his 18th we walked everywhere at everytime of the day, even did the subway. Felt totally safe, Croydon on the other hand, fuck that.

Howdy everyone. As I let slip about a month ago I'm about to get married and head off on honeymoon with the better half. As I know a lot of you chaps are a heck of a lot better travelled than myself I was hoping you all might have some good suggestions for things to see and do in the following places:
  1. Las Vegas, Nevada
  2. New York City, New York
Since I'll be busy next Monday and won't be back for a month my faithful companion banstick will be virtually packaged up and e-mailed to TdC for him to wield, god help you all! ;)

For Vegas, do all the touristy stuff, Grand Canyon etc. I'm partial to the Aria hotel. Rooms are very nice, plenty of clean pools, saw almost no kids (Cesars was overrun with the little buggers). There's always cool stuff going on, ask the concierge at your hotel to set you up if you are going to a show. It's what they are there for and it's usually possible to get decent seats for shows even at late notice.

For New York... how long are you here for? Top of the Rock, Empire State building, New York Stock Exchange, Brooklyn bridge etc is all good for photo opportunities that can be done in less than a day. I recommend doing top of the rock on a clear day before sun goes down.... watching the sunset from up there is something special. If you are here for longer, visiting MoMa and the Met are pretty cool too. You can use http://www.nyc.com/events/ when you are here to find interesting next day events.
For the Steak lover, book a table at peter Luger's steakhouse in Brooklyn... nom nom nom.
