Howdy everyone. As I let slip about a month ago I'm about to get married and head off on honeymoon with the better half. As I know a lot of you chaps are a heck of a lot better travelled than myself I was hoping you all might have some good suggestions for things to see and do in the following places:
  1. Toronto, Ontario
  2. Chicago, Illinois
  3. St Louis, Missouri
  4. Springfield, Missouri
  5. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
  6. Amarillo, Texas
  7. Albuquerque, New Mexico
  8. Holbrook, Arizona
  9. Flagstaff, Arizona
  10. Grand Canyon, Arizona
  11. Las Vegas, Nevada
  12. Barstow, California
  13. Long Beach, California
  14. New York City, New York
Since I'll be busy next Monday and won't be back for a month my faithful companion banstick will be virtually packaged up and e-mailed to TdC for him to wield, god help you all! ;)

Thank you. Doing overland except Toronto to Chicago & California to New York. Basically doing a partial Route 66. Couple nights here there and everywhere with some more than others. Really looking forward to it as I've not had a holiday since 2009!

Silly me, you're doing Route 66 (ish). Bits I know:
  • Chicago - get a pizza at Lou Malnati's, go to a Cubs game (baseball).
  • St Louis - See the arch, take a trip on the Mississippi just to say you have
  • I have no idea about Oklahoma and Texas; I've been to both but the bits you're going through are really flat and dull.
  • Albuquerque - Breaking Bad! See if you can spot the locations. You could also visit Los Alamos and irridiate yourself a bit
  • If you have chance to divert between Albuquerque and the Grand Canyon, head up to Monument Valley, as impressive in its own way as the Canyon itself.
  • There's jack all in Barstow - its just a place for people too tired to do the drive from Vegas to LA in one go; personally I'd push on and get to LA if you can. Long Beach is quite a long way out and there's a ton to see in LA (I wouldn't live there but it is great if you're a visitor) - Universal Tour, Hollywood, Santa Monica and Venice are all cliches, all worth it. If you have any time at all, San Diego is another two hours down the I-5 and its really nice; La Jolla, the zoo, maybe even go whale watching off Miramar.
  • New York - shopping, Empire State, Battery Park, Staten Island Ferry (so you get the best view of the Statue of Liberty), Circle Line cruise (takes you all the way around Manhattan), and loads and loads of great places to eat, but my knowledge is probably out of date.

Shag young American girls! They fucking LOVE the English accent. It's easier than buying McDonalds!

Oh. Wait...

;)

Other than Belushi's for a calzone and perving at the fit on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago, I've not been those parts of the world... :|

I've only been to two of the places on the list but I'll give you my thoughts on those:

Toronto - The distillery district is very cool and well worth a walk around/ drink in one of the bars.

New York - My faavourite place I've eaten in New York is definitely The Breslin - http://thebreslin.com/. I've had their whole roast suckling pig, but you need 12 people for them to cook you that. They will however do you a leg between 2!

Minibar http://www.minibarbyjoseandres.com/ is super trendy if you're into that sort of thing - I've never been because it's not my thing, but my friends who live in NY rave about the place all the time....but they are also the type of people who say things like "Oh that's the new Jose Andres place....we HAVE to try it".

If you like bookshops then The Strand http://www.strandbooks.com/ is definitely worth going and having a look around. The place is bloody massive and the top floor has a really cool collection of very old and out of print books.

If you want to go up in the statue of liberty then go online now and try to get tickets because you need to get them months in advance nowadays.

Long Beach can be a bit dangerous at night in the wrong areas. There is even a curfew on teens at certain times. Go south down the PCH to Laguna Beach, lovely area with good restaurants and bars with live music at the weekend.

Going there myself next week.

Vegas is easy - the strip, fuck all else there apart from desert.

Totally agree drive to Las Vegas is only 4-5 hours from LA.

Regards LA, Universal is worth a visit but personally I prefer staying south or going to San Diego, Six Flags and Sea World are great.

I prefer San Diego as well, but it would be a bit perverse to drive all the way across America, get within ten miles of LA and then not go there.

New York - Roccafella is better than the Empire state imo, but do it just t say you've done it. Better views from Roccafella though

Las Vegas, fuck me, where do I start haha.

Defo go to the grand canyon. Get one of those helicopter trips where they pick you up in a limo from your hotel. Cheap as chips but such an experience.
Personally, id stay at one of the hotels at the south?? end, where there is a block of the Luxor, Excalibur, new york new york and MGM. We stayed at the luxor, was mint.
Whatever hotel you stay at, at check in, put $20 in your passport with the tip of it sticking out and ask if they have any room upgrades. If they have spare rooms that are better than the room you booked, they WILL upgrade you. The wife cringed when I did it but worked a charm.
Spend a night just walking up the strip, soaking the atmosphere in. If you are a peasant like me and the wifey, just get drinks from the numerous off licences on the way :) Takes about 20 mins to get the centre of the strip where Bellagio etc is.
As its honeymoon, book a table at Olives at the bellagio and ask to be seated outside next to the fountains (see these anyway). The food is effing out of this world and you feel like you are in the middle of the fountains!
You can basically spend a night in each hotel but defo visit the cheescake factory in cesears palace, its lovely.
Jump in a taxi and ask to go to the retail outlet past the las vegas sign, the taxi driver will know where you mean. The price of clothes there is shocking. I am a sucker for ralph lauren so when I found I could get 4 polos there for the price of one in the UK, I ejaculated all over the shop floor. Think I spent $200 dollars and basically had to buy another suit case and pay for extra baggage.
Gamble! Just for the experience. Or if you want to be a cheapskate like me, just sit at a slot without playing then when you see a waitress call her over and get free drinks haha
Go to fremont street. Its like, down market las vegas but fuck me, what a laugh. Its a massive street with the biggest light display in the world and there are loads of bands on.

I disagree with Marc, stay at the Wynn or cosmos. You want to be near the action.

First I were thinking of giving advice on a camping trip in the wilderness, but decided against it. Pictures of the aftermath when you come back...
