We're trying to plan our Honeymoon for september of this year. We've had our eyes set on Mauritius....Has anyone been? Or do you know anyone who has and where they stayed?
Or do you have other suggestions that will be good for that time of year and give us a similar 'gorgeous white beaches, watersports etc'? Budget is about £3k for both of us .
Thanks!

Sorry can't help :( When I got married Cornwall was the place of my honeymoon. Was good at the time though I fell ill.

just a thought

do u want to go do "beaches etc" for your honeymoon ? now theres nothing against that in theory, but wouldnt you rather do something really... novel ? even if it means putting it off six months and saving a few more quids ?

just a thought :)

No, we kinda need to do the honeymoon straight after the wedding...and we do actually want to go somewhere with stunning beaches, as neither of us ever have. We're looking at buying a house straight after the wedding and if we delay the honeymoon it means delaying the house buying, and if we delay the housebuying, then we delay me having babies.....so no, really don't want to delay the honeymoon!

What about Egypt? Beaches, interesting history, probably cheaper than the Maldives.

The time in September is important. Early september and you will still be paying school holiday prices.

I haven't been to Mauritius myself but my parents have and they prefer Barbados. One thing I do know is that in Mauritius they will have shark nets up. Now this doesn't mean that its not perfectly safe for water sports and swimming etc but some people may find this worrying.

shark nets dont mean shit

they are designed to impede the shark to encourage it to go elsewhere, they can and do come thru/round/under them and take people on beaches :p

I'd say go to a bed&breakfast in some place 'cause the honeymon time is meant to be spent with eachother, not oogling at sights you could pretty much do solo ;)

That being said, go where you want, not where others think is good for you.

What time of year?

Oops. Didn't read the post properly. September is a funny time for beaches; Caribbean is not at its best (late hurricane season), but if you're prepared to take I chance I'd recommend Tulum in Mexico (my favourite beach). If you're a bit more adventurous, Florianopolis in Brazil is pretty cool, and its the right time of year. Going the other way, Langkawi in Malaysia is worth a look, and once more, exotic but the right time of year, Lombok in Indonesia (not been but its been recommended to me). Can't say I'm a huge fan of traditional honeymoon locations, its what puts me off places like the Maldives (although I want to go and dive there).

I'm thinking of going to Thailand for Honeymoon...I think they have some stunning beaches...
My plan is to also go to Hong Kong for a little bit before or after the beach stuff....

Unless of course some other interesting ideas come out of this thread!

I didn't mention Thailand in this thread because September is the rainy season. Ditto Vietnam, which has some great beaches (Cua Dai near Hoi An is great).

I'm thinking about China and Vietnam myself this year. Or India.

My sister went to Isle de Margarita. Apparently great beaches and it was possible to make lots of jungle adventures either over the day or a few days and sleep in the jungle. They also swam with dolphins. They loved it :)

We went to the dominican republic a few years back, it was incredible. It gets dubbed a lot as "the poor mans carribean" but I see no problem with that, the beaches were immaculate, and the island was amazing, we went on a helicopter trip around the coast we stayed on and an open back jeep ride into the mountains and saw some of the local villages which was massively eye-opening. Also the service in the hotel was 1st class. When we went it was about £2500 for a family of 4 to go for 14 days all inclusive which was a bargain.

A fairly stereotypical destination, but the price will be better than most other resorts of a similar nature and if you want to buy a house in the near future it might be an idea. It might also be cheaper as the island has had some bad press in the last couple of years, I havent looked into the prices though so might be wrong. Just an idea for a more affordable holiday in paradise though.

Or Turkey, cheap as chips and some amazing places, depends on how xenophobic and worried about terrorism you are though as I know a few people that have been put off by that kindve thing.

In september you might even be able to get onto a decent cruise for a cheaper price. The med' cruises at that time of year arent too bad if its after the schools go back, that way you get to go to a different beach every day or do cultural type stuff if you want a break from pure sun-exposure

the date we are looking to go is 6th or 7th september as the wedding is on the 5th. Domiican republic looks lovely, but the whole caribbean is under hurricane season from june to november, so its all out, as is Margarita for the same reason. Thats why we've kinda ignored the USA and caribbean.

one of the problems we have had is reading too many reviews.....we find a place we think is wonderful, then a bad review puts us right off.....but thanks for that website, its cool!

I wouldnt base a holiday decision on reviews by other people tbh, they can be good for guidance, but some people just expect too much from a holiday and are never satisfied by what they find.

imo the important thing is just to go somewhere, anywhere. you'll just have gotten married, so it's going to be awesome even if the locals throw donkey poop at you whenever you go outside.

tbh I'd forget beaches and go to Chile or Argentina to ride horses and eat steak. err, and go out in BA ofc, and shag till I couldn't walk, but I suppose you'll already have that covered :)

If you have to beach, well, my personal fave beaches are along the Cape Range National Park and Shark Bay in Western Australia but swimming could be a bit meh hehe. On the other hand I am still having the Maldives and Seychelles very high on my list of places I'd like to see *rubs hands*

I have two close to me and both are yummeh!
As for honeymoons, I went to Cyprus and a cruise to Egypt for mine both being lots of fun.

Places on my my list are Equador, specifically the Galapagos Islands, which may appeal to you and James as iirc you are interested in wildlife? (if I got it wrong then oooooppps).

If you are completely set on beaches there are some beautiful, romantic , secluded non-touristy places around Italy, Sicilly etc etc

I can safely say the island Lankawi in the northern Malaysia was the best trip I have ever had, check it out. However; it might be alittle risky since september is in the very late part of their rainseason. We went there in middle november, and it was just perfect. In before most people, had the beach mostly to our selves, and the weather was perfect.

Turkey is really really nice, if you can find a place off the beaten path that is, also highly reccomended is Tunisia.

I had a friend who went to Mauritius for 3 weeks and he loved every day of it, and he wishes he could go back every summer, if it just wasn't so far away.

Southern Italy has some secluded places, (maybe more in Sicily, I haven't been), but not many, and its extremely expensive. Don't get me wrong, I went there for my honeymoon and loved it, especially Sorrento and Positano, but its not much of a beach place (personally I think Italian beaches are terrible).

My biggest regret from when I went travelling was missing out Ecuador, everyone I know who went there raved about it.
