Yo,

Not been on holiday for about 2 years now and seriously feel the need to get away. Any recommendations for a week away for a single guy who wants to sight see, enjoy the culture, food and just chill out ?

ps. Never been away on my own before.

Said it before and will say it again...Krakow in Poland is great. Lots to see and do, cheap tasty food and good beer and easy to meet people. Of course, this time of year its pretty feckin' cold so you'd have to not mind that :)

Iceland if you don't mind the cold. Reykjavik is a small city with lots of strange food and a great party on New Years Eve. Lots of sights to see around the country (gullfoss, blue lagoon etc)

If you want sun, Dubai is decent weather in Dec. New Years here is a blast and all the hotels have big events on. Malls & Shops are decorated better than in the UK to. Caribbean or South Africa is also nice for a winter break.

Yeh I went to Gambia in January and loved it. Fancy somewhere different and for a single guy this time.

Deebs, I'm considering Cape Town or Miami for a week or two over Christmas and new years. Got some tips for Cape Town, just weighing my options up for Miami.

Cuba. Or Costa Rica, or Honduras (Bay Islands). All great (I know you've done Thailand to death).

I can recommend Romania pretty highly. Iasi is getting a ton of investment, the beer is cheap, the food is great, the shopping is decent, the nighlife is good and there's lots of history around as well. And you're only an hour away from the Carpathians and some truly breathtaking views.

Looks like it's effectively impossible to get decent seats to Cape Town for over Christmas, now :(

i went to fuerta ventura (canary islands) a few years ago (Feb 2010 i think) was great fun, ~22C the whole time, cheap drinks, cheap food good times :)

if you are not looking for sunshine this time of year i can recommend Prague, amazing city :)

(or if you are looking for the single angle go to Scandinavia and speak with a british accent, chicks here love that shit :p )

Not to mention, hella cheap compared to other EU destinations. Very friendly and open natives, good level of english, incredible nightlife if that's your cuppa tea.

And, most of all - SAFE. Read between the lines here, I know it says petty theft is common, but it really isn't, unless you're flaunting your open wallet whilst day dreaming. Terrorist threat? There hasn't been _one_ terrorist related incident in Romania in the past 50-60 years. Mugging is very very rare (not heard of any in the past 5 years, tbh), and it's usually targetted towards known rich people (where the mugger gets a tip). Card fraud? No such thing in regular shops or bars/clubs. It is probably the most tourist friendly east european city at the moment. Pro-western attitude all around.

I did a Brasov, Sibiu, Sighisoara tour just couple months ago, 5 days, 4 nights. Total damage? 180 pounds (hotels, meals/drinks, cabs, trains, museums, everything).

Yes, police is mostly corrupt, but not regarding public safety. They crackdown on un-welcoming attitudes pretty solidly.

I'll just say this - don't hit on girls who are obviously otherwise engaged with another guy - Latin blood overhere.

Enjoy.

Canary Islands are always a winner around winter time. Cheap beer, good hotels, good weather and easy women.

While I love Iceland to bits I don't think braving an Icelandic winter is what Deebs has in mind. Cape Town sounds smashing tbh, too bad I'm poor as fook atm or I'd go with you Chilly :)
That all aside, I'd prolly want to go bake on a beach myself. I like the Carib islands tbh: chill out, do some swimming and sailing. Eat lots of seafood. Find a nice bar to party at.

Going to Sharm El Sheikh for New Years myself. Cheap 5* hotels and all inclusive sounds good to me. Weather meant to be awesome around this time of year as well considering the cold over here.

Not sure it would be the place I'd choose if I was travelling on my own, unless I was going diving or something. Think I'd want somewhere with more nightlife choices.

Me and the gf. She can't drink for a while and I can't be arsed spending a lot of money doing tourist stuff.

But on your own, it does give a 'safe' base to explore the rest of Egypt from, flights to Luxor and such are meant to be quite reasonable and it beats staying in Cairo :D.

I can recommend Morrocco for sure. Been all over the damn country, and had a blast in the small towns of Chefchauen (Small mountain village, known as the Blue Village due to the special hue used for the buildings) and Essaoira, the superrelaxed surfertype coasttown. I can give some tips on good hostels or riyadhs too!

Nightlife good in those places ? Wasn't a fan of Morocco at all but I've only been to Tangier, Fes and Marrakesh.
