fuck polite if ur paying like 2k to holiday in dubai as long as its not illigal drink and eat till ur fat and full \0/

Thats what you said.

It was not about eating during the day, but eating in public etc.
Just think its pretty ignorant and loutish to go to a country and completely ignore their way of life, and even throw it in their face.

I'm not saying become muslim for two weeks, but respect it and dont just "fuck polite".

Yeah gohan, got to agree with pikeh.

We go on a lot in this country about people not respecting our way of life, not learning our language etc. You cannot have your cake and eat it, it's a hangover from the colonial era, we think everyone should speak English, let us do what we want in their countries, and then respect us in ours.

to be fair its taken out of context, he said would drinking water on the beach be considered impolite, in that context then yes, fuck polite, your not on a fast why should you suffer in the heat, their fasting for thier relgion, its about tolerance, example is that in UK christmas is big holiday (ok so its not the whole christian thing its ment to be anymore but still)

its in your face, you cant avoid it, some muslims jews shieks (SP) ect celebrate christmas as a holiday, some don't, no one forces them to tho, so why is it any different

It's the way you expressed yourself gohan, came across as a very typical brit abroad.

also more on topic i do think its very different if your living or holidaying somewhere, if i went to live in sweden (why the fuck would i do that lolz?) then i'd learn well... danish them motherfukers all the same anyway <3 cork

but my point is if your going to live somewhere you'd chose somewhere that the culture suited you unless your a moron, if your going on hol, you choose somewhere that the sea sand sun and price suit

Note to Toht - don't just quote, make your point and new thread it before reply, else the debate may not have even started and you confuse the 2 threads about holiday/ways to act.

It really does depend where you go, you're probably safe to do what the hell you like in certain tourist enclaves. In some resorts you're likely to have to follow local or regional custom (and even Dubai is regional, surprising in such a small area really).

Fact: The current population of Dubai shows more than 90% non-nationals. I'm not saying Ramadan isn't important there, it clearly is, I just find that a startling fact.

lets play devils advocate....

if they can come to the UK and force their culture on our society (hence why we so multi-cultural now) - then they should be able to deal with people going on holiday and bringing their society with them for a couple weeks :p

Working and living abroad.

The first job I did abroad was in Oman for a 12 month contract. I was on a military airbase 17 miles off the coast of Oman. It was an island with a coastline of only 110 km. It had one village on it. Why did I do it? Quite simply I was promised a pick of whatever I wanted after completion plus the money was great. I finished a year there with a bank balance of 80k GBP and that was back in 1993. If I remember rightly I was on about 25k and a company car back then in UK. So I gave up 12 months of my life to essentially set myself up and buy a house.

It was a strange culture to me but one thing you learn very quickly is that expats of a similar type group together. They are a tight knit bunch who look after each other.

The reason many expats are working and living abroad is due to the added benefits. These range from huge uplifts in salary to salary being tax free, paid accomodation, free health cover, paid private schooling for children.

After doing for so many years now I would find it difficult to live back in the UK.

That was what being British was about for a long time - wandering into someone elses country with a gun and a crumpet and asking which they'd prefer...

Irony is, most of the countries we went and "Civilised" by teaching them Cricket etc now kick our arse at it reguarly!

My favourite quote on the whole developed vs developing world thing was from Ghandi. When asked what he thought of Western Civilisation he said: "I think it would be a good idea".

Problem is with clairvoyance abilities to see when a new rail of discussion is coming or is it just reply and done.

The thing is, that means you have to accept they are "F*cking up your country".

Any country opening up to tourism knows exactly what they are getting into. They build resorts and pricing structures based on the type of people they want to attract. OK in the current world wide depression things have gotten a lot cheaper due to people not spending money on expensive holidays. It's a clear choice made by the governments of those countries on what type of developements they allow.

Here in Dubai hotel occupancy rates have gone from over 90% to less than 20% in some hotels. Many have laid off staff and even closed entire floors. So prices have fallen, some by as much as 50%! As such we're starting to see a few more chav's about town.
