Hello!

Got a new PC a while back (bought as components and assembled by myself), and have only just got round to connecting the floppy up (Yes I know, lazy).

Put floppy in tower, connect power, connect floppy IDE, check all connections etc, looks good. Turn PC on, and I have no floppy drive :(

When I turn the PC on the floppy drive lights up, so I know the power cable is working. I have tried 2 x IDE cables, one of which was used in my old PC (so I know it works) but still nothing. I have looked on the motherboard diagram, to see if for some strange reason I needed to change a jumper, and could not find and jumpers relating to the floppy drive.
I have also tried running "Add New Hardware" and it does not find it.

Can anyone help?

I am running:-
Asus A7N8X deluxe
Win XP
Geforce 4 ti4200
1 gig RAM (2x PC 3200 512 sticks)
The floppy is a cheapo generic one i bought for a £5 from a local maplins or similar, can't remember to be honest.

Please don't let me down! :)

Thanks

Chris

Aside from connecting the cable the right way up, you might want to check in the BIOS to see if the FDD is actually enabled :)

indeed

although i often use them for school work... untill it gets too big...

(isn't there a missing pin/lump on the cable to prevent you puttting it in upside down??)

most motherboard manufacturers seem to forget about the floppy cable when it comes to adding the little notch in them, so you have to rely on the other markings to figure out which way is which.

just remember always that pin1 is marked by a red cable
(inspect your drive cables and you'll always see a red line along one side of it)

ensure its pushed into pin1 on the board and then insert the cable so the red line faces inwards on the drive, i found that most drive manufacturers change the position of the power so doing the IDE stunt of "red to power" doesnt work any more, so make sure the red line is in the middle of the drive.

Thanks for the suggestions all.

Didn't swap anything over, but opened up the case, had a look, had a look in the BIOS, unplugger and relugges everything, and now its working :eek6:

Oh well, the wonders of technology hey ?!

Thanks all for your help though

Chris

Oh PS - the reason I need floppy is for my little bro - barely any of his machines at school have CD drives, and those that do he doesn't have permission to use anyway :/
