For some reason my copy if IE6 has started downloading zip files and automatically opening them without giving me the option to save it or open it.

Any way to fix this?

Cos generally I save zip files to the desktop and open them later, and I'm a lazy arse and don't wanna right click & save as... either ;)

PS: Christ almighty it's warm tonight :/

My Computer

Tools > Folder Options > File Types

Scroll down to .ZIP files

Advanced > Confirm Open After Download (tick)

Thats for XP and I 'spose it works with 2k aswell

----

My problems even worse, if I ask to open a file instead of save to disk it will download the file then display an error saying it could find <filename>[1] anyone heard of that?

What the hell Sar?

My IE6 has done exactly the same thing today, and I have no idea why.

BTW sounds like the default handler for the program has been uninstalled, or the registry entry for it has been corrupted.

Try re-installing Winzip to reset the file association mebbe?

Don't forget to get hold of WinZip 8.1. Nice new XP-style interface and some nifty new features, in particular the 'Extract to here' menu item which I use all the time. Previously I would extract to folder, cut and paste the contents back up a level, then delete the empty folder.

Dear Christ on a pole, I'm boring. :(

I use Winrar v3.0 meself, prefer the way it displays .zip contents.

I'd recommend http://www.winace.com/ to all you winzip/rar users.

I switched over to it a month ago and found it much, much, better since it supports probably every file compression format :)

WinRAR has had that feature since I began using it, about 18 months ago. It's compression algorithms (for .rar) are much more efficient than Winzip as well, especially for multimedia.

But using WinRAR is like trying to stop sunlight streaiming into a room by colouring in the window. It gets the job done but its ugly and unnecessarily complicated.

WinZIP is your old, old friend.

I never liked WinAce possibly cos every time I download it when its installed its default language is German :(

I use Winzip and WinRAR for the hard to reach places :)

You're wrong and you know it. C'mon, just admit it.

[Mrs Doyle]Ya will, ya will, ya will![/Mrs Doyle]

I don't think WinRAR is ugly and/or complicated at all... Maybe you think Winzip is simple because, y'know, you're a bit, well, simple? ;)

yeah, that's happened a few times with me too

It's a lovely program when configured properly, though

Outlook... gngghhh... dented icons... GNGNGGGHH! :(

I know what I'm going to do... I recently aquired a very high quality Tenacious D music video...

...I'M GOING TO ARCHIVE IT IN WINRAR WITH A PASS AND SEND IT TO YOU AND YOU'LL HAVE TO INSTALL WINRAR AND OPEN IT WITH WINRAR AND EXTRACT IT IN WINRAR AND...

...then probably uninstall WinRAR. :(

I use command line 'zip' and 'unzip'... I'm not sure whether that's "1337" and such, or like one of you using Windows Explorer as your ftp client :/

isn't that macs? to be fair, it sounds like in this instance the problem was caused by a windows update, probably to fill a gaping security hole though.

i do think windows in particular, and microsoft in general, get a hard time, but most of their "problems" are caused by them trying to accomodate the mass market, whereas the likes of linux has a comparatively clear and defined user base.

ooooh! oooooooooh!!4

I'm well aware of what seems to be the cause of the issue, aye, but imo you're cutting MS too much slack mate. They, after all, have positioned themselves as world desktop leader thus they should cater to their users in a clear and concise manner. They, since the newer versions of doze, vet the shite that the average user is allowed to install so one would expect that their programmers should be able to dream up a patch that doesn't screw up said user's system. This isn't the myriad combinations of hardware we are talking about. I'm willing to overlook problems in that sector you know, I'll give them that, but this is software. This is the unified doze environment, and in this unified standardized place that they created themselves they patch their own software -and screw it up.

I use the ZIP thingy built into WinXP. Cos its there. And when I double click on a zip file it lets me view the contents then unzip it somewhere. I fail to see why I'd need a program to make this very simple process more complicated. Which is kind of why I think Linux is deeply deeply shit.

I agree that I prefer just using the XP built-in ZIP handling. Mainly cos it involves no work on my part for it to happen :)

.zip is the only compression standard XP handles natively. How do you open .rar files?

Well, seeing as i dont download .rar files this hasn't really ever presented itself as a problem.
