why does the queen read out the governments plans? i mean its a nice tradition but seems a bit schizo to one year be talking about the need for tax cuts, and the next year after an election to be talking about the need to spend spend spend!

Because it's HER government.

Laws are passed on her command, by and with the consent of the Commons and the Lords Spiritual and Temporal.

That's why she refers to it as "My Government" rather than "The Government".

Actually the next step is the retirement of cash so that all spending can be monitored (and taxed).

I'll give you some delicious cheese for your chicken, Ryn, except I don't really like that antenna sticking out of it's arse....and that said I'm sure you're not pleased with the rfids lacing my lovely stilton!

It is sometimes a little surreal living here - we just seem to be on a path of losing more and more freedoms to the state to 'protect us'.

At some point I hope for some sort of backlash but I wonder more and more if it will ever come - the people in general seem oblivious to the loss of freedoms and there's no sense of it galvanising anyone.

Materialism has lead to people becoming horribly shallow and spending their days like good little drones buying the latest crap and posting inanities on 'social networks' whilst never really saying anything at all...

This. I couldn't agree more.

But, as you say, people just don't seem to care about anything any more unless it directly effects (?affects) them - and they "feel" the effects physically. And even then it's an effort to get them to do anything about it. Even in the times I have taken the lead and tried to change things for other people for the better (with their encouragement), the moment those people have to lift a finger to help themselves, suddenly you're standing alone.

I can sympathise with people's apathy to a degree, because I feel so powerless to make a difference to anything 'big' these days.. to the point that I'm probably as guilty as the people I complain about now :/

Huff. *dons tinfoil hat*

So what was this thread about? :) *reads*
I understand the need, to a degree, and I have nothing to hide - except a lot of Farscape, Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother currently - and so long as it still allows me to maintain my "public" and "private" circles on the interweb, which is hard enough as it is, I don't have a huge problem - they can't zero down onto me without good cause.. but it really opens the door to misuse if the wrong person (or hacker) gets their hands on it. I'll have to stop poking people on Facebook for starters.

I wouldn't worry too much. They will have their hands full trying to pass new bills on the House of Lords, getting rid of the Bishops (conscience of the House) etc. Expect that to take up most of the year :)

No but didn't you expect the recession to generate something?

Didn't know we were in a recession in the 90's ;)

Edit: I agree with you of course. However, to properly tinfoil it - I think a lot of the laws were in preparation for the planned recession and that "they" are surprised that we've given up reacting to them - so are pressing on with passing more whilst they can...

The cost for all this shit will be mind-boggling, and guess who'll be paying for it?

Look on the bright side, the encryption market is about to explode, along with offshored VPNs. It'll also be interesting to see what the corporate world has to say about all this, its an industrial espionage charter.

They aren't getting rid of the bishops. The ones that sit there by 'right', the Lords Spiritual, will be reduced to 12, but since the upper house will be smaller they'll actually make up a larger proportion than ever. Actually Polly Toynbee (omgz but she's vile normally) covered this quite well. Funny bit a few paragraphs down.
