High ping (7000) playing UT - please help

I'm getting very high ping when playing UT GOTY. My task manager tells me that CPU usage is 100% so I guess that's the problem, although I'm running a P3 800 with plenty of RAM and a 56K modem. Also task manager shows me that some other programs are running (system stuff) when only AOL and UT are open, and won't let me close any of them! I'm running Win 2000 - would that cause problems ? Any ideas gratefully received - thanks.

have you tried a different isp? aol could be the problem behind it, but i dont think it is.

Try putting the netspeed lower (to modem settings).

What speed is your 56k connected at ? (if you double click your connection, usually about 54,000bps or so)

If you live about 10metres from the telephone exhange then maybe

on average most people get between 38-50k on 56k modem
