I haven't purchased a Hi-Fi Stereo type device for years and years and am now in need of one for the house.

I have seen a car stereo that takes a standard USB memory stick and would like the same feature on a Hi-FI, also I was wondering if any were made that could take a USB external hard drive.

Do any of you crazy youngsters know if such a thing exists? ;)

Yes, there are lots of them.

Just remember if you are going to get a USB storage device on which to keep music that with these stereos if you use USB hard drives you can have big delays (30-45 seconds) between songs, while with flash drives (we have an 8GB one for the car - PurelyGadgets.co.uk - Storage - LaCie USB Key (Black) 8GB-301027) there is no delay.

OK Great, (I have storage devices coming out of my butt) I will be mainly using a USB Stick but wanted the option to use my HDD's if needed.

Any make/models of Hi-Fi's in particular you could recommend?

Afraid I can't recommend any Hi-Fis specifically - we have a Technics Hi-Fi that is awesome, but they don't make any with USB inputs afaik.

As for car stereos, always go for Kenwood - they're awesome :) Our car stereo got regularly nicked (about every 6-9 months) when we lived in Armley so we were able to try a plethora of car stereos. The Kenwood ones were always the best, better than Sony, JVC and miles better than Blaupunkt.

Cheers both, i was just having a play with some in Currys and i have discovered that some browse sub folders better than others and some just play mp3's if they are in the root which sucks.

More research needed on this one although I have seen a rather nice Sony one.
