Hey... British guys...

Why is it that your TV shows hold my attention more than our American shows?

When I was young, "Benny Hill", "Monty Python's Flying Circus", "Dr. Who", "Danger Mouse", and "The Tomorrow People" kept me glued to the set.

A few years ago it was "Chef" (a riot!), "Are You Being Served", and "Who's Line Is It Anyways?"

I rarely watch TV nowadays, but when I do, I try to find a nice British comedy or cartoons (South Park, Looney Toons, any Anime series, ect...). You guys make some great shows, send more!

BTW... anyone know of a good site with info on The Tomorrow People?

When I was a kid Blake's 7 was my life :) They used to show you on Blue Peter how to make all the accessories out of cardboard and washing-up liquid bottles, just like the makers of the show did :)

Jamie and the Magic Torch had the best theme tune (although Chorlton and the Wheelies had charm too.)

Brits just have imagination I guess. Yanks often aren't adventurous enough in there programming due to advertising pressure.

Look at the watered down crap version of Jap classic Gatchaman that Sandy Frank gave us in Battle of the Planets. Pant-o-la. 7-Zark-7 was just added to tell us that nobody really got hurt and to give the 'moral' of the story. The animation they added (7-Zark-7 and the G-Force restroom) was crap and really stood out from the Jap originals. The juiciest plotlines were lost as well (Zoltar was a Hermaphrodite kids :) )

Oliver Postgate showed that kids don't just like the same old shit. He came up with Bizzare ideas for kids shows with no action, no heroic figures or any of the usual cliches. Just plain weird really. But kids loved The Clangers, Bagpuss, The Woodentops, Ivor The Engine etc... Those would never have got made in the USA I'd bet.

Our comedy output has gone downhill tho. USA comedy 0wns UK at the moment. The ones you mention are all pretty old.

um, enough rambling. I may return later :D

How abouts Phoenix Nights, and The Royle Family as well.

Not sure how these would be received in america though.

Pheonix Nights is very good.

The Royle Family isn't a comdey though. It's the most broing and unfunny piece of drivel ever, and I really can't see why it has been so successful, as it just doesn't deserve it.

Heh...Watched the Weakest link USA a couple of days ago... Anne Robinson's even harder on the Americans! It hasn't been well recieved in the US though...

Well, they have Welsh people in the US too (they tried to block her Visa request). The thing is, they probably feel insecure - especially their gameshow hosts... mwhahaha.

Logic7, you should get some vids of TheFastShow sent over, they are a hoot. Jonney Depp = biggest FastShow fan i think.

Bit like Monty Python but not quite as funny (cmon, nothing beats Monty Python's Fly circus.)

It's a fucking appaling piece of shite. There is no humour whatsoever. And what the fuck is so interesting and involving about a few thick people sitting in front of a TV - for ever?

Almost sounds like Bevis and Butthead...

Anyways, I almost forgot one more show, "Mr. Bean". Rowan Atkins is great and I've been fortunate enough to have seen his stand up show; I laughed till I cried!

Least B+B made jokes, and were generally interesting.

The Royle family has made me laugh once, and that was when they made a joke.

Seriously though, you see all these award shows where they show clips, and everyone in the audience is in stitches for no apparent reason.

Jim'll say "Oooh, will you get that?" and they'll go nuts?!

We need more Friends.
And Spin City (how cool is that?)
And Buffy & Angel :)

I quite like the Royle Family but it's only funny for one series really.

The Royle Family is ok to watch once, but it gets boring seeing a fat bloke sit in front of the telly every episode. As a result its absolute crap.

Chorlton and the Wheelies ruled the roost for me as a kid. I used to watch Bagpuss as a kid ("we will fix it.."), and Jamie and the Magic Torch was also a fave (what was the name of his dog?).

More recently, Ren & Stimpy, South Park, The Simpsons do the bizz, although not much beats the good Tom & Jerry toons :)
US sitcoms do really stick a paper bag on the head of ours and give them a good kicking. I love Friends, Frasier, Cheers, etc etc. I was impressed by the latest Lee Evans offering, although I have to agree that Spaced is probably the best thing that will grace our terrestrial channels for a long time to come.

Follow Custards advice and get The Fast Show if you can. Brilliant stuff. Also watch as much Eddie Izzard doing stand up as possible.

Isn't South Park american?

But anyway the only TV series I watch nowadays are Friends, Have I Got News for You? and Trigger Happy TV.

Yep, South Park is American. It's probably the single greates show created in the last 5 years.

The first series was classic, and absolutely hysterical. Degenerated into racist, offensive jokes and relied upon swearing to get laughs soon after that though, sadly. :/

Yeah, South Park now sucks. The Simpsons 0wns South Park and every other TV show.

Nah, I'll say the first two season of SP was good. Then it was kinda hit and miss. Sometimes it was good, othertimes it was downright stupid.

I think I liked the first few years of The Simpsons, after that, I pretty much stopped watching.

Old skool cartoons hold my interest now, as well as one or two newer toons. Dexter's Lab is cool and the "Ego Trip" movie had to be watched.

Still, nothing beats a good episode of "Chef".

One of my all time favorites is Red Dwarf. The Simpsons is not as funny as it use to be, has homers voice changed slightly??

GateKeeper: Yeah I've been watching teachers (monday night repeats tho), great series. For people that haven't seen it, wednesday at 10 on 4 or 1/2ish in the morning on 4 on mondays. V. funny.

And for anyone that hasn't seen season 2 of spaced and has sky digi, e4 have been repeating it on and off for the last week, so you should be able to catch some, another great series.
