I want to know what (..) is and why? It's not for exams or anything, just something I saw in the paper and was thinking about. Number logic isn't my strong suit heh :/

ok, after some thought I have this:

16 (96) 12

X  Y  Z

Y / Z = 0.5X


so

10 (..) 15

X  Y  Z

Y / 15 = 5

15*5=75

Y=75

can it be??? have I made fire?

Yes, it also works the other way.

Y / X = 0.5Z

Tried it both ways on both sets of numbers.

what a stupid code. There's no way of knowing you are right since you derive the rule from one example and then apply it blindly to another two numbers - of course it's going to be correct. I bet there are a few ways of making 96 from those two numbers. Not gonna work em out tho cos I'm all mouth and no trousers!

also, in the same paper, my mum read it too and called me to ask what to do.

a circle has a circumference of 75cm. what is it's area?

area is pi * r^2

circumference = pi * d

so

75 = 3.14 * d

so

75 / 3.14 = d

d = 23.89 thus r = 11.94 thus area = (3.14 * 11.94^2) = 447.65cm2

and then......she called me to tell me I was wrong because the guy she asked was an optician! an optician!
