Help with Vista/betfair?

Before you scowl at me, I don't have vista :) I'm trying to help a friend out, and it's his pooter, and when I say that I'm trying to help a friend out I obviously mean that I'm being no help at all because I'm a computer retard. Beyond "Have you tried turning it off on and on again" I'm pretty much useless, and I only know that because Kenny says it to me all the time when I phone him up in a technopanic.

So, this all leads to me smiling sweetly at you lovely FH peeps, and wondering if you can work out whats going wrong for him (yes, yes, beyond Vista being shite).

The problem is this:

He has downloaded a programme called Betfair Rapid. However when he tried to run the programme he gets the following message:

"This wizard cannot be run on a computer running a member of windows server 2003 family or a later operating system because the background intelligent transfer service (bits) client component is already included in the operating system."

He contacted Betfair, and tried the remedy they suggested:

Go to Start -> Control Panel
Select "User Accounts"
Click "Turn User Account Control on or off"
Make sure the "Use User Account Control" checkmark is not checked
Click OK
Restart Betfair Rapid

And still no joy. I've tried googling it, and found no known compatability issues between vista and the software. Do any of you have a clue what could be going wrong?

Not off hand, but Betfair suggesting that any non-technical user disable UAC is out of line, and I can only assume your friend got through to the mongiest of mongs that mongdom has to offer. Speak to Chilly and ask him to hunt the mong down and hang him from his happysacks.

According to all sources I can find it should run under vista perfectly well. Can you be absolutely sure your friend is definitely running vista? And do you know if he's tried compatibility mode?

Havnt heard of any specific issues. TBH helpdesk are the guys you need to speak to, they tend to be very helpful and will escalate to a developer in the API team if needs be without much delay. On behalf of betfair I apologise :p

It's a really quite common thing for tech support mongs to tell people to do. I've dealt with a number of clients whose UAC is disabled because some net provider helpdesk prat told them to.
