Hey!
Was wondering where the option is where I can turn off auto-detect hardware in winXP?
Basically been havign trouble installing a HP PSC multifunction printer thingy (model 1317) and when it says connect the USB cable to continue installation, it hangs on step 7 of 8 every single time. My last resort is that winXP is interfering with the installation as it detects the printer and spams me with about 4 windows saying CLICK HERE TO INSTALL!!!!.

Unless anyoen else has any ideas out there? Tried HP support and lol what a joke :( ended up speaking to some Indian in India for 10 minutes as they spewed out all the stuff i've already read on the support section of hp.com

:(

Anyhow, if anyoen can tell me how to disbale auto detecting I'll give it another go :)

FAILING the above, can anyoen recommend another printer thingy to buy? printer/scanner/copier job, saw a Canon one for £50 on dabs.co.uk and was opting fo rthat as the HP software is a preopr lagfest when firing up the pc

I don't think you can turn off auto hardware detection in XP, its key to the O/S

Try plugging it in closing the autodetect windows then installing it?

can you not install it without the HP software? i.e. plug it in let windows detect it, then load the drivers that way?

the installation process requires it to be plugged in halfway through which is a complete arse, and its on that stage where it hangs after all the auto detect windows have been closed
sucks big ones :(

It hangs when you close the auto detect windows?

Can you not leave them open and ignore them and allow the installation to complete before closing them or does it lock up regardless?

Other than that what neffneff said does it work with generic windows drivers?

tried letting windows install it even let it connect to i-net and it cant find this or that says insert cd (which i lost), so no it wont do it that wya either :/
and if i try leaving the windows open the installation just pauses whilst i deal with the windows, once i close them it runs to step 7 of 8 and hangs there :/
