*HELP* - UT killed my WinXP

I run windowsXP on a nice&fast PC(AMD XP1700+, 512MB RAM, GF2 etc).

Today I was playing UT and at some point my speakers started making weird sound, so I pressed ESC during match in order to test my sound when my PC hang up and no keys worked, even ctrl+alt+del. After about 5-8 secs PC restarted and instead of WindowsXP start up screen there was blanck DOS screen and I could not load WinXP by typing 'win'; I restarted my comp, but nothing changed this time and I still couldnt get to WinXP, I checked files on my HDD using 'cd' and 'dir' commands and no files have been erased/deleted but I could not start WinXP.. :(

Oh, and since I built that PC only a week ago, I havent made a system disk so I am stuck..

Does anyone have any idea what might have happened and what I can do, as i do not have any alternative OS other than DOS/WinXP on that PC?

thanks

DOS no longer exists...all you're seeing is a Command Prompt and it doesn't have the same meaing as DOS...you can't do a lot from it as its no longer a true part of Windows..........basically to me it sounds very serious.

erm, to my XP doesn't have DOS - just a command prompt, this may be supaficial, but might be worth checking the commands available to you

Also, I play UT GOTY Edition with no problems at all.

Try booting from the Windows XP CD and it should give you some recovery options.

Runs fine on WINXP as well...like the thousands of others games that you can play with Windows.....no emulators here

I think it's safe to that UT didn't actually cause this and that it's most likely a hardware fault. If I were you I'd start by physically removing your sound card as that seems to be the most logical device at fault.

If you're just seeing loads of files then you're not actually booting from the CD. Go into the BIOS and change the boot priority so that the system boots from the CD-ROM before the Hard Drive. Insert your XP CD and reboot. You'll be presented with a menu which will have an option to repair Windows XP.

Go here for a step-by-step guide.

Well then you can't boot from and you may well be screwed.

You might want to try to get hold of a free Windows XP Evaluation copy (they were distributed on the October 2001 TechNet bundle, or check the MS webbeh), boot from that, then swap the CDs over at the license screen. Accept the license and watch everything run form your 'backup copy' (assuming the XP core files are on the CD in an i386 folder)

Not that I'm talking from experience or anything. ;)

You might also want to have a look here about creating XP startup floppy disks.

UT runs fine under XP for me.

I actually installed it again the other day out of curiosity to see how it would run on me new-ish rig.

Sweet would be the answer btw :D

Oh and another person having probs with XP, an athlon and a GF2.

Hmmm

Oh, pack it in. 2K is not better than XP. Tsk.

Just look at the enhanced compatibility features of XP, for example. You don't get that in 2K.

*cough* service pack 2, fs

I have XP, Athlon and a GeForce 2 with no probs.

Its 2k with a few addons stole from other companies and enhanced themes. These features are of no use to me and besides the mouse speed in halflife is pants even at maximum. If I wanted a fancy interface I would goto wincustomise.
Besides ever typed themes in Start>Run on 2k?

Since when has a decent OS had to have hacked drivers for a device to work.

Only good thing is that its 5.1. Living off it big brothers success.
