Meh.

Help purlease :)

Here's my dilemma -

Newish job, got 2 bosses who whilst really friendly etc have zero clue about anything technical.

They need the company website up by TOMORROW LUNCH. Great.

Its a really tiny company and their email is hosted by Plus.Net (shudder) and they have the obligatory crappy Plus.Net webspace thrown in.

They've paid a local web company to design their site, so they told me anyways. I looked and all it is is a crappy template with a web design tool that this company host. So I've used the web tool and updated everything so it lists everything our company does etc etc.

Now I've got to the point where its 90% finished. My bosses said use ANOTHER company (local) to host it - and as I thought this company dont do web hosting theyre a fking normal PC shop (you get the clue that my bosses arent aware of much).

I reported this back and they want to be hosted by Plus.Net (gah!), I cant even find their Plus.Net login details.

Here's my prob then. To be up by tomorrow the company really needs to go with the place that is currently semi-hosting their files. I also think plus.net are shit and that trying to get anyone to actually talk on the phone about uploading etc isnt going to happen ("see our webhelp etc").

UNFORTUNATELY...my bosses in their wisdom have already used Plus.Net for our company URL (well via the free webspace thing anyways) - so if I type in www.ourcompany.co.uk it just points to a "welcome to plus.net please edit your page" shit thing.

Doesnt this mean that if I go with the company semi-hosting our site they now have to seriously dick about to reclaim the URL? Or?

Im not a web expert either, just know a bit more than my lovely (hot female btw) bosses ;)

Sorry for the ramble, all posts welcomed. Just want the site UP.

I think you have to stick a web page on the plus net space and then it should come up when you type in the company url...

it comes up with "welcome to plus.net please edit your page" because no webpage has been created...as yet which is where you come in.

edit: I think you can point the company url to any webspace you like if you know who they got the domain name from...

It's a bit late to change who you have the domain registered with but as far as I know you have two options:

1) Upload the files to plus.net (not easy if you don't have the ftp username and password but a quick call to tech support might help).
2) Change the name servers to another host (name servers point to who hosts the website files) via plus net's admin control panel. You will have to do this via Plusnet as you have the domain registered with them. You may have to call them. Arf :/. You will also have the same problem here if you don't have any account details.

Option 2 is usually a pain in the arse when the domain is registered to an ISP. Usually because they usually give you absolutely no control over your own domain.

There may be other ways but I'm a bit of a web nub really.

Either way you will need some account information to get past the muppet who answers the tech support line.

If you change the DNS stuff for the domain the site wont be up by tomorrow lunch, if that was really an actual goal. The dns records will probably have a ttl of a couple of days, give or take so you do really need a minimum of a day or two for the DNS changes to propagate everywhere and point to the correct server.

I would plead with your bosses to let you change to a different domain registrar company, and use a seperate host. If not for this particular incedent it will be a lot easier for you and them in the future.

If the site isn't huge, or particularly famous - and they haven't printed a ton of stationary with the web address on, it's sometimes easier to just register a new domain name with ukreg, for instance, and get a new host like 34sp (cheap uk host) and start again. They'll have complete control, it will cost about 25 quid a year, and they wont have to keep dicking around with local tards running a server on a desk in a rented office who insist their self-written content management system has everything you need... or something along those lines.

As Chilly says, if you change the DNS settings even now they may not be fully sorted for another 48hours i believe it is.

Assuming you have your domain and hosting configured correctly your quickest option would be to upload the site to your host.

You could always look at switching your web host and registrar later, hopefully with little or no downtime.

Dirty bois meg and jup :)

Well everything is getting sorted now, dys's final comment made me think "noob why didnt I think of that?".

I've gone ahead and TOLD my bosses that we are going with the small company who are already semi-hosting it. Managed to get the guy to 50% of his usual price too ker-ching.

He's going to get the plus.net details and point the URL to his server where we will be hosted anyways so problem solved :)

Thanks a lot for the replies, realise just how much I've forgotten and how much of a noob I am , nvm the bosses.

Pix available on FTP...;)
