I have beem playing Ct for about 6 months and was doing okay with average ping about 200, using PIII , 450 hz, 56 k modem and vodoo 3000. now in the last week or soo, i have seen my pings jump up to 400, and spiking at 1500, i have trid all the CL_***** commands but to no avail.

what i would like to know, is

1. DOes anyone have any idea? i recently deleted some dial up networkings, due to fault with ISP, does Cs have dedicated dial up?

2 and more important ,looking to see if its still an ISp problem, so im after other Scottish users who are on 56k modem using BT Surftime. they had problems all through new year so wondering if still gremlins.

i tried neotrae and showed some spikes but when repinged they settled down and others spiked?

ANy help would be apreciated, as im going nuts here not being able to play

thanks

Firstly the settings you can specify in your cfg files will never make 150ms worth of difference, I'd say the problem lies with your ISP.

CS doesn't have dedicated dialup but BarrysWorld do, and if you play on the BW servers you may want to try using that for a better ping. http://www.barrysworld.com/info/barrydial.asp for details.

Also, if you play a lot of online games you DON'T want to be using an ISP that utilises BT's Surftime. I don't have time to go into the reasons (maybe someone else will explain to you?) but take my word for it. It's crap for gaming.

I know lot of modemers who play on a 56k modem and have lot more stable connection, and it's not because you're in Scotland either.

I'm a modem user on a 24/7 dial up (with a 56k), and i get great pings of 130 at times, and if i am in a server that is not overcrowded. It sounds like you do have an isp or even phone line problem, why not phone bt and ask them. My m8 uses surftime and has a stable ping of 180, so no reason why you should switch isp to something that costs you.

So what ISP do you use Ch3tan?
I have NTL for webpages/downloading, but it's crap for games with cl_flushentitybollox every 5 mins so I use Claranet for games, but even with them 130 ping is almost impossible (certainly it has never been consistently that low)

I am in the Telewest london cable area so i connect through to the london blueyonder isp. I've only had pbolems wiht connection twice in the last 2 months, its pretty good for a 24/7 conection, better even than the BW dial up at times

Blueyonder can be rather "unpredictable" at some times though, it's probably that :)

Ping AGAIN

Okay, thanks for all your replies, but none the wiser, I tried neotrace and i was getting nice low pings of 200 to the server, then id get an occasional spike at one address this would setttle down then next refresh, then another would spike.

i would l still like to hear from anyone else using Bt surftime, from scotland, because the isp newsboard is screaming with people witht tech problems, butr none like this

would altering any of these affect the connection. networ drivers? or server connections dial ups.

I REALLY REALLY MISS THE GAME

thanks again

Hi again, still on about my problems getting back onto CS, i have tried all sorts of different solutions, including using NEOTRACE, i do a trace and get spikes at 1500M/s and one site and the next sweep shows this as smoothing out and another serverpings at 1500 m/s.

As i said when BT had problem, i could not log on so tried to tweak a few settings, this included deleting some dial-up settings. In addition i also installed MSN chat at same time (dont ask me why) and was wondering if this could interfere with it ( No o do not have it running while im trying to play.

So my questions still exist

1. Does anyone know of any scottish players using BT Surftime on a 56k modem, are the currently playing or have they went Awol?

2 any ideas of fixing it, i was thinking instaling Win Explorer 5.5 and re-installing game, and re downloading gamespy.

I know there is general prob with Bt at moment so this makes me loathed to do this, but the support you get from BT is non exisistant.

Errr

It's not exactly a conundrum

Surftime gives you a shite connection. Don't use it. Use a different ISP.

Reinstalling software is going to make no difference to your connection.

okay LOOK I KNOW SURFTIME IS A CRAP SERVER, BUT AT MOMENT ITS ALL I CAN AFFORD OR USE.

So aparart from changing ISP, i need to see if other surtime people are having problems.
