minstrel = very bad idea. Far too complicated for a first char - maybe once she's got the ropes and whatnot or if she's a veteran of quake 3 and other twitch reflex games but a minstrel is really not an easy introduction to the game :)

Friars are good, fire wizzies seem like a good start too - lots of fiery effects.

smite cleric (hey I gotta pimp teh smite somewhere) is actually quite nice - bit like a fire wiz but a bit easier to get groups (if you put some in rejuv so that you can pretend to be a rejuv cleric) if you want and you can survive the monster getting up close and personal (so a bit less frustrating than starting with a fire wiz if you get your roots and bolts confused)

probably best to go for a friar, though there is the whole "what do you do when you hit 50?" :) depends if you're a l33t fg RvRer or whatever.

Also it could be good to pick a class you know quite well yourself so you can identify what those funny icons are etc. - all helps in the beginning :)

Surely tank is easier - merc? or arms maybe - friars have the whole buff/heal/fight dilemma going on

Tank could be easier but I'd say friar is better due to much reduced downtime when soloing.

What chars have you levelled personally zeus?

Usually fighter classes are the best way to learn a game as they are most 'intuitive'. In all solo rpgs I roll a fighter class whack over the first couple of areas then reroll somethign I want to play :)

I'd suggest a Paladin as a first char, can solo ok when needed no trouble getting groups and just a bit more involed that the 'pure' tanks. Reaver would be another good choice but less easy as a first char due to the need to get off style chains for decent damage.

PS If you got a character slot free make a level 1 with her and play up to 20 will really help her to learn the game

Why hasn't anyone said a cabby. They a nice reliable caster much more forgiving then say a wizzard, pet classes always go down well for new players.

Added to which cabbies have a great pve specline matter she can use till she is 50 or once she is 50 to pwr lvl another toon. If she is sick of pve she can just got hybrid matter/body/spirit or spirit/body for rvr, even matter will be great in seiges which is what dominates NF.

Best of all she can make a great pve and rvr duo. Sorcs, Mincers and Clerics go great with cabbies, especially the Sorc in rvr.

Cabbies are great really, I played a mincer first and it was a pain in the arse, luckily it was when the game was first released so i didn't standout becuase everyone else had no idea too. Tanks are simply the dullest characters even if effective they have little to keep you occupied. Necroes are just sooo great in solo pve but useless in grp pve and rvr of all kinds. Minstrels are by far the most fun class you can play, but as it has already been pointed out they are even too tricky for some experienced players to cope with so are only worth it if u are up for a challenge.

Minstrels are very complicated characters, far to many abilties and tricks to learn for a new daoc player to pick up quickly.

I'd suggest a cleric if you can presuade her to play a support class for you, or if she wants the pretty effects type of thing a wizard or theurgist will do.

If she wants to tank friars are a fun class.

Think if your gf is total greenhorn in RPG, take pure tank - only "a few" of icons, "simple" control.
If she's not total greenhorn, fire wizzy/theurg/cabby imho for dmg deal and not being involved in first line PvE fights.

But imho, describe her all classes and let her choose. No matter if the class is hard or easy, important is if she's got fun playing it.

Necro's are nice for first char... (3-4 button class)Or even a ice wiz (1 button class(pbaoe)).

I would say it's not true when people say that necro's aren't any good in RVR or in grps... I have gr8 fun with my necro both in RVR and grps, as well as i'm able to chain pull mobs witch makes leveling good and fast.

if everything goes wrong you could always make a friar...

Adviced my GF to make a friar... (her 1st was a chanter on PvP, big mistake)
Shes rr5 now and still loves playing it, I think it appealed to her because she could lvl it fairly easy...
She choose to solo it most of the way to 50, but didnt have major problems getting groups...

I wouldnt ask anyone to make a necro as 1st char they might be easy to lvl but playing a necro can be a mind job, they will allways be at the receiving end of all sorts of verbal abuse justified or not...

Be preparred tho, your GF will very lickly not have the same goals in DAoC as you have, how the char looks (name, class, race, fancy weapons/armour and dyes) is way more important than how it performs in eg. RvR...
You will very licky spend countless hours grouping with her, guiding and advicing, or exspect the cookie jar to be hands off...

Im not saying all girls are like this but this is my personal expirience...

Iwe tried Online games with a GF hating it, and now a GF who plays allmost as much as I... And i choose the last anyday even tho it comes at a price...

oh one last think ice wizzy arent 1 button i play an ice wizzy and solo all the time and hard every use pbaoe. but yes you could grp from lvl5 and never press any other button but what fun is that?
