A friend of mine is having some problems connecting to different servers.

the scenario -

2 computers on a network connected through a router (fully configured). computer A is me, B is the other one.

A can connect fine, always has done. B could connect before but upgraded to xp pro.

B can no longet connect.

the only thing that changed is windows version. windows fully updated. all conditions are PERFECT (B settings same as A exactly)

so, anyone have a clue why B cannot connect since getting xp pro?

If they are both exactly the same, dosnt B need an IP address of its own?

Have you checked that the new XP upgrade isn't running the XP ICF (Internet Connection Firewall)? That's the first thing I'd look at.

He says there isn't any firewall or anything enabled. Computer B is set up exactly the same as computer A, but it wont connect :(

Presumably you both have different IP addresses, otherwise you'd know about it. Check the gateway settings of each PC by opening a cmd shell and typing route print.

The output should be similar to this:

Code:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
  (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

  I:\>route print

  Persistent Routes:
    None

Note the 0.0.0.0 entry at the top. Check that this is identical except for the interface address (which should be PC B's own IP). This tells the PC where to send non-local subnet traffic. Change the IP settings if this is not the case.

Assuming the above is fine, can you ping/browse each other?

If that works, check DNS.

Oh, and check that the RJ45 cable is plugged in...

nice way to confuse things there with the route print command.

its easier just to run CMD and type IPCONFIG for the info

Code:
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

        Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : MSHOME.NET
        IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.10
        Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
        Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
ideally when you type that command you should see similar to the following, if it starts with 169 then Windows cant see the DHCP server and has automatically configured itself as a strange IP address.

the usual networky questions apply here to troubleshoot:
Is the router configured to act as a DHCP server?
Are you able to ping computer1 from Computer2? (if you have a right IP address)
Are there lights on the back of the network card to indicate connection?
Is the cable connected firmly into the back of both Network card and Router/Switch?
Is the network card detected by Windows?

run though those first, if its not picking up an IP address try giving it a static one which matches the rest of the network.

There would have been less in there if the edit timeout on the boards wasn't shorter than it takes to edit the crap microsoft text parsing.

And it's hardly confusing if you follow the instructions given :p Besides, I try to avoid M$ on the desktop, so that's just the way I do things :)

Only help if you want to... it's just my friend asked for help on some forum but the forum moderator was a fuck head Nazi although I'm sure he was just doing his job...

Keep the ideas coming, they are much appreciated.

No worries, just the previous replies produced some trepidation... :)

I suspect TdC's giggle was at Windows giving problems tbh, rather than Clown asking for help.

well, both. as I'm nasty atm, and will be for another two weeks or so. Clown's request is reasonably legal in forum terms, and the person he's asking for should have used his head a bit more before the original post.

Well, Clown, you obviously think you're above the normal forum rules... see you in 5 days. Thread closed.
