Help me with the stats please!!

OK, Ive seen a couple of bits and pieces on stats but still not quite getting it.

I play a WH. Gota few Qs

What does increasing my sword DPS do? More white dmg or does it boost my abilities as well?
What does pistol DPS improvement mean? Merely more snapshot dmg or better executes?
Whats ballistic skill/ weapon skill for? Says BS is +dps and WS is less DPS dealt to you, is that right?

Sorry, just not sure about the actual dmg dealing mechanics.

BS is for ranged weapons and WS is for melee weapons. Whether or not the WH's pistol counts as ranged or melee i don't know.

I'm 99% sure that increasing your DPS increases everything and not just your auto attack, otherwise DPS would be pretty pointless.
