Hellraiser...?

Just interested to know what people thought of this film, or more particularly, its sequel 'Hellbound' (later on tonight, ch4).

I thought the original was a great (though slightly typical) horror movie, given that little bit of an edge by the mere hinting of the Cenobite's dimension (or hell) and how it appeared. After seeing it first time I wanted the sequel to go deeper into this other world, and was very satisfied when I eventually saw it, with the impressive amounts of creativity, the gruesomeness, great immersion and good 'horror-factor'. However, saying this, I can see how people could think differently...

So:

Hellraiser 2: 'Hellbound' - Disturbing, immersive, epic adventure into a frightening alien world? Or plotless, strung together, badly structured weirdness?

I didn't like it.

Horror by using gross out skin tearing blood and guts all over the place imagery is no longer scary to me.


Psychological horror is much scarier IMHO.

I found The Blair Witch Project scary.

I found Audition scary - especially the sound of piano wire through that guys leg down to the bone.

I found Omen scary.

I found Ring scary.


Hellraiser did use a lot of orginal imagery on its effects, but ultimately these were not enough to be scary.


Oh, and the story was crap as well.:p

Gross out horror has never been scary to me.

The only films I found remotely disturbing were Event Horizon, Blair witch, and Ernest Saves Christmas.

Jeepers Creepers was very scary at the beginning in my opinion. The end... nah. But for the first 40 minutes I was pissing everyone off in the cinema by jumping and swearing at the same time.

One thing that scared the crap out of me when I was younger... anyone remember that thing on Halloween with Sarah Green in it? Where they faked the haunted house documentary? Maybe it was just cos I was young, but that terrified me. If anyone has a copy I would love to see it again...

I remember that! It had Craig Charles and (I think) Des Lynam in it. A studio light smashed (though with a camera conveniently placed to film it) and everyone was like, 'whoa, ooh' and it was great.

Good stuff. Not been anything like it since but maybe there's a reason.

Aye, Event Horizon was exceedingly well done, gave me a few 'frights' and such. Jeepers Creepers was fine as far as tension went, until the whole "monser" thing became apparent, that took all the tension out of it for me, it just became another monster film with less insight.

What happened to Ghostwatch after its controversial broadcast? The subsequent outcry saw it subject to a limited publicity and repeat ban. This has long been lifted, though it is highly unlikely to be screened again.

While we're on a (kind of) related subject, some you might want to listen to the classic 1938 recording of Orson Welles' War of the Worlds which arguably has never been surpassed in tricking the nation into a mass panic.

Bear with it. It's nearly an hour long and the actual original broadcast doesn't kick in until 2:26 minutes into the recording.

I liked the Hellraiser series, although the third one went a bit too far, and according to IMDB there is a Hellraiser IV due out this year :)

Event Horizon was a good film, although not particularly scary, but I was biased because I thought I was going to watch a sci-fi film, not horror. The best part was the end music ("Funky Shit" by Prodigy).

I remember Ghost Watch, that was a classic, first they had the "haunted house", then it was revealed as all faked, then it all went crazy "for real" ...

Best bit was people phoning in saying they saw shapes moving in the background and weird stuff was happening to them when it was all a big illusion, proves just how gullible people really are.

i remember ghost watch, was there a bit where they were talking in a room, and then a supposeid caller rung in to say there was an imprint of someone behind the curtains. i remeber that bit scaring the crap out of me.

Anyone remember this??

Scariest thing I ever saw was when I was 10 (mid 70s). It was on BBC2 and was a play about a research team investigating paranormal activity.

I think the research facility was annexed to an old building. I remember a stone walled room with some steps carved out of the wall going up one side. The scientists had all this stuff for measuring temp, infra red , microphones set up and they built up suspence by having the scientists scare the shit out of one another as they described the events.

This was much more believable than the craig charles crap which imitated it badley.

Exorcist is hillarious. its just plain f**ked

/ot just began reading LOTR 'oh my god its a long book', also read the hobbit explains loads that i was baffled about in the film

I think that was called the stone tapes, not too sure.

Never saw it myself (too young) but It always sounded really cool.

I saw hellraiser II before the original Helraiser - I found the original a bit more "grittier" (well as gritty as a comercial 80's horror flick could be) than the sequel. Hellbound was far more entertaining :D

As for Event Horizon - I made the mistake of seeing that in the cinema - no cushions or sofa to hide behind!
It scared the shit out of me, totaly disturbing. A classic haunted house / he's behind you story set in space.
Watching it on TV it loses a lot of the effect.
