Cant they leave anything alone?

They're going to make it shit. Seeing as the games industry nowadays is just a giant cash cow, starcraft is just going to be another "look at this sequel! everyone buy it!" thing.

I hope I'm wrong, I really do.

EDIT: After actually looking at the thing I'm a little less d00m and gl00m :D it doesnt look all that bad! go on blizzard! prove me wrong! :D

try to be optimistic, it doesnt ruin the first game that they make a 2nd. doesnt make starcraft any less of a roxstar game. just hope for it to be good, and if it sucks wait for people to release loads of player designed maps with identical features of starcraft 1 :D

I dont know. I used to think like that, but tbh after playing so many poor sequels that were made only for the money I just get annoyed when I see it happen.

Cant really explain why but it was the same with Ground Control. Just dont want to see that happen with Starcraft.

after looking at the site, it doesnt look all that bad, so i guess its best to wait for the thing to come out. I first saw some of the poorer screenshots on IGN though without seeing that website in this thread, which made matters worse :)

Well, i work in the industry as a guy who designs those "cash cows".

Maybe you should've said "Quite a bit of game industry is just a cash cow".(which would be still overshooting it)

Also if you dislike a game, it doesn't make it a cash cow.

ground control roxed so hard :) then came the low budget cashcow sequel :(

but its hellishly hard to live up to a big hit anything in a sequel, no matter how good number 2 is, it will rarely (if ever) live up to the expectations.

no, bring on star trek online tbfh!

Dont take it personally but simple fact is sequels are designed these days for the sole purpose of generating revenue based off the success of the first title. Gone are the days when developers had the resources to actually produce a game sequel because thats what they enjoy doing and given they are at the mercy of their publishers they're subject to the greed associated with them.

Its a real shame, really it is and its the reason we're seeing the 19th sims expansion, Call of duty 4, Need for Speed 129, etc.
There are some original games. They can be hugely innovative but slightly unsuccessful due to a lack or coverage of not appealing to the mass market and you simply don't see a sequel to them. Personally I would love to see a Dungeon Keeper 3 but ever since bullfrog was sold to EA that series is subject to never seeing the light of day again due to lack of profitability.

Its sad, but every game is made to be a cash cow now, and if it isnt...well. There goes it and its designers.

I disagree with that though.

Sure, there are some cash cows like the EA sports, which brings little new to the table. Or like the PES, EVO soccer etc.

But like with Need for Speed, i've yet to see a pure cash cow ripoff come from them. Every single one of them has brought new stuff that is more then enough for a sequel.

Much like Battlefield series.

Infact, aside from sport games, there's really not that many "rip off" sequels out there.

There are, on the other hand, players who expect too much, hype the sequels to ridicilous levels and when they don't get enough candy(even if they get a huge bag of it), they cry and kick around.

MMO babies are the worst.

Maybe I should've used words that a mincy politician would use so I could please everyone in the entire world. However, I say what I think, and I'm not going to take back what I've said, nor apologise for having an opinion.

To be fair whilst I'm not always 100% accurate, generally I dont think I'm far off the mark when it comes to games - calling the games industry a cash cow is true for too many games developers nowadays. EA seem to have made it thier company ethos to fuck up most things they touch, and games that really are generally accepted as half decent seem to be getting hard to come by.

People release so many MMO's you could almost play a different once each day for a month and probably still not have covered them all, because world of warcraft is making money, so most others seem to want to jump on the bandwagon, and to make it worse, shite film spinoffs seem to line the shelves of any games retail store you go into.

I didnt exactly call starcraft a cash cow, and how can I not like it if I've not even seen it? I made a -perhaps rash- statement that "they're going to make it shit" because, after seeing a couple of screenshots in IGN, thats what I thought.

I dont call games cash cows because I dont like them. I might like a game, but if its shoddily developed and rushed out too quickly because the publishers are being tight, then thats what happens, the fact that i might like it changes nothing.

Case in point would be the delta force series, novalogic kept making more and more fucking spin offs and clones, just so they could rake it in, and screwed the fans of the series over royally. I liked the games, but it doesnt change the fact that they were basically cash cows for novalogic and we were being taken for a ride.

Although I'll admit the last year or so has been better.

Its not an attack. I'm not saying TOHTORI HAS RUINED TEH GAME INDUSTRY have I? I didnt even know thats what you did untill you started getting offended.

I've never said anything about you not having the right to an opinion. You quoted what I said about the games industry and basically said I was wrong, and that I should have said something different.

You're entitled to do that, but dont start that "everyones got the right to an opinion" lark right after you've basically rejected someone else's opinion.

You take offense to my opinion, and when I say that I'm entitled to it, you act like I'm attacking your opinion.

Like I said, I only said what I said after seeing a couple of screenies on IGN - not realising there was a site up - and made a rash statement. I've since edited the post and said that it doesnt look all that bad, so what are we arguing about?

Jesus mary and josef cool down. I was just saying that you have the right and i have the right to an opinion :eek7:

First comment i made was "i think i should be offended" which was a bit tonguecheek.

I didn't reject your opinion at ANY point, i gave my opinion on the matter and explained why i might be offended.

You have the right to call the industry a cash cow, but i also have the right to say that you're wrong and say that i might be offended by such accusations towards my line of work. NOT MY WORK, my line of work.

Like some football fan might be offended if i called all football fans gay.

"Like I said, I only said what I said after seeing a couple of screenies on IGN - not realising there was a site up - and made a rash statement. I've since edited the post and said that it doesnt look all that bad, so what are we arguing about?"

The point that you called the whole industry a cash cow. Thought that was clear.

And yes i know you said it in jest, still.

the industry is a cash cow though, like any industry. business isnt there to make the consumer happy and leave them feeling loved. they are there to make money by appealing to certain people.

The producers are there to make money, but that's what pisses me off really in this and in peoples misunderstanding, the developers don't care that much about money(they get paid monthly, that's it) and care more about making great games.

Sure, call the producers cash hungry bastards on meth, but don't say that people who make the games make them for the money, 'cause noone does that.

Ofcourse, dont we all know that? :)

Nobody starts a business just to be "loved". :p

BUT

I wanted to type this but you beat me to it. I agree with that, people who just get the fixed paycheck in the gaming industry dont really care about the money, they try to bring really cool stuff to the table.

On topic: SC² looks "good", but have to wait for more.

if they care so much for making great games, why the hell are there more SHIT games then great games on the market? :)

yes i know i know, "following orders" and shit. but really, would be nice if they actually WOULD release a great game more then a few times a year compared with the metric ton of shit games thats getting flogged out on a monthly basis.....

time for the devs to stand up and grow some balls tbh :p

yes i am exagerating....

At least Blizzard unlike other companies I could name have proven they can do sequels and do them well.

Diablo 2 is probably still one of my favourite games of all time, purely because it did everything that was great about the first, but improved the bits that wern't as good, instead of the old rehash everything and make it something it's not approach.

Expansions normally mess everything up as mostly the need to get new content in messes up the original balance, as most people playing DAoC will no doubt of realised a long time ago. :)

My biggest gripe with most sequels is that they are very similar to the first, but have to be accessable to people that didn't play the first. That means that anyone who actually played the first one ends up playing what is essentially a tutorial for the first 75% of the game since it's just reteaching you what you learnt from the first one.
RTS games that rely on a campaign are normally horrible for this.. 3 hours of move unit A here.. kill building B, yes I get it!! let me fight something harder than a farmer holding a turnip already!!
