you can choose not to press the buttons

What sort of choice is that? You may as well watch a DVD if you don't interact with the "game". You follow the course laid out by the designer exactly as they want you too or you fail and get one of the alternative endings, depending on just how many times you fail to follow their instructions.

In short, you are a moron.

So for example... the scene with Norman Jayden, Blake and the religious nut. What choice counts as the "right" one, and what one counts as a failure?

I had [R1] staring me in the face for a long, long time and I chose not to press it. It wasn't an instruction, it was a choice.

Ok i'll try to outline the general principles as clearly as possible so you might actually comprehend. And you're actually thinking along the right lines as i went in to Heavy Rain expecting an experience similar to a DVD/film - only it's one i can "watch" multiple times and get a different story each time.

For example as mentioned by others i chose not to shoot the religious nut, until a point where it was a 'knee jerk' reaction....why? Because i was playing the part of the investigator...i was making his decisions in the story, and i regretted it soon after. Whereas somethings you can reload and do it again, in Heavy Rain it's a case of 'that was your choice, now you live with it' - and i've no idea what effect, if any that might have. Maybe he would have provided some valuable information later? I've no idea, and that in part is the point.

I expect there are plenty of people 'playing' this thinking 'OMG PROMPT TO PUSH BUTTONZ! *push*' without thinking about the effects or consequence.

You get out what you put in, immerse yourself in the characters and consciously think about what's going on and what you're/they're doing and you might have a more enjoyable experience.

Then again maybe you just like pushing buttons, in which case don't play it.

Open your mind Quaid.

Ditto. Having a choice is dependent upon knowing just what the different options will accomplish.

I will agree, though, that this was one of the situations which could play out differently depending on which button you pressed. If they pursue more entertainment products of this type they will need to have more such choices, and more possible eventualities.

In many ways Heavy Rain is just like the Steve Jackson fantasy books of yesteryear. Good story and shows promise for the future, but falls short of being truly satisfying.

Thats the point though, you dont know what your outcomes will accomplish. Same as in real life

I know i keep saying it but Farenheit was brilliant too, same thing

Its marketed as an interactive Drama iirc ... so moot point games ppl ...

Definitions of game on the Web:

* a contest with rules to determine a winner; "you need four people to play this game"
* a single play of a sport or other contest; "the game lasted two hours"
* an amusement or pastime; "they played word games"; "he thought of his painting as a game that filled his empty time"; "his life was all fun and games"
* animal hunted for food or sport
* (tennis) a division of play during which one player serves
* (games) the score at a particular point or the score needed to win; "the game is 6 all"; "he is serving for the game"
* the flesh of wild animals that is used for food
* plot: a secret scheme to do something (especially something underhand or illegal); "they concocted a plot to discredit the governor"; "I saw through his little game from the start"
* the game equipment needed in order to play a particular game; "the child received several games for his birthday"
* your occupation or line of work; "he's in the plumbing game"; "she's in show biz"
* crippled: disabled in the feet or legs; "a crippled soldier"; "a game leg"
* bet on: place a bet on; "Which horse are you backing?"; "I'm betting on the new horse"
* frivolous or trifling behavior; "for actors, memorizing lines is no game"; "for him, life is all fun and games"
* willing to face danger

As an amusing pass time it qualifies as a game though.

It's just one person who thinks he is right, and everyone else in the world is wrong. :)
