If you sign up for this new service expect to experience at least 10 evenings/nights of LDing.

They run a series of tests on your line for the first 10 days (more if you're unlucky) after you're moved on to this service. Internet connection seems to be stable during the day but after 8.40PM mine goes haywire until sometime around 5AM. Constantly kicking my offline and then back online - unfortunately usually long enough to go LD.

So if you're going to sign up for it make sure there's no ML/Arti raid that you really, really want that coincides with the testing.

Hopefully my connection is going to be stable from Monday next week.

hah, serves you right for using bt :)

Mind you, Pipex are worse, new pipex customers get 8mb for 33.99 (uncapped) where as existing customers cant upgrade to 8mb, and instead they get 2mb for 33.99

Nildram are ok if you are thinking of switching,
Plusnet are ok but you need to wait 3 months before 8 meg is available from them, saying that all existing members get upgraded fore free \o/
Only think is the traffic shaping they have in place (basically things like p2p get capped during prime time so that everyone can have a good speed)

I didn't realise BT had an available 8mb service yet...

Must go see if I can upgrade from 2mb...

Nildram is the same firm as pipex, only difference is the name and company details on paper. Nildram got bought by Pipex though afaik

This is what the pipex site says:

pipex said:
PIPEX is currently preparing its product offerings for existing customers who wish to change their service to PIPEX Max*, therefore at this time it is not possible for existing customers to change to this service.

If you are interested in PIPEX Max please check back regularly for updates as more information will be available very soon.

*PIPEX Max is a new offering which allows for download speeds of UP To 8Mb dependant on the quality of your line and the distance to your local exchange.

Absolute bollocks, i rung them and they said they don't have the hardware facilities in place to migrate existing 2mb customers across to the 8mb service. They said that they expected this to be sorted within a week or so. Their week runs out tomorrow before i ring them and discuss cancelling with them. Shit customer service to neglect your existing customers in favour of getting new ones, pure shit.

Well past the 10 days now and my internet connection is still unstable in the evening after 8.30pm (though it started playing up at 8.20pm on wednesday). Bloody typical that our guild's alliance is running ML BG raids now that I can't go on them :p

Why not dial up temporarily?

You probably have better line quality than my connection then :)

I've since replaced my adsl router modem and the new one is a lot more tolerant. Have actually managed to stay connected for 36 hours so far.

Looking at status monitor on the new modem it says my Downstream margin varies between 6dB and 9dB during the day, but after 8.30pm it goes to down to anywhere between 6dB and 0 dB.

My adsl router modem's manufacturer says that it needs to be 10dB at least for stability.

What are your attenuation values?

36 downstream, 19 upstream

i've also noticed that when my old modem was reconnecting I could hear noise on the line.

looks like my filter could also be dodgy, which means I'll have to have someone look at it as it's in the mastersocket because my adsl was engineer installed (pre-Wires only)

Yeah you're pushing the limit for 8mb adsl, if your sync'd that high it could cause lost packets etc.

I am on 24down 16up and its solid as a rock..best thing to do as you said is try and fix any noise that could be coming from your end and the connection could get a bit more stable.

Aye it's synching mostly in the 8000s which I suspect doesn't help. I was told when I requested Max that I'd be expected to get something in the region of 5.6Mbit/sec, so I wonder why my line synch rate isn't lower.

Tried eliminating anything that might interfere - turning off the wireless network, videosender, cordless phone. Also have unplugged the phones and skydigital box and connected the modem directly into the master socket.

Doing all this however makes no difference whatsoever. I'll see about getting the master socket replaced and hope that this helps, otherwise it looks like it's external interference.

BT should set the rate after 10 days, which is why you are having the "tests" if it has been longer than 10 days I would contact your ISP and tell them you need your sync rate lowered, I suspect if you were syncing at say 6000 you would not have any trouble at all. Best of luck buddy, I know how shit BT can be :p

Ta :)

I suspect the tests are over, but the results were flawed as I was managing to stay connected to the net during most of the day which might have skewed the results up in favour of a high synch

Currently waiting to hear from them. An engineer phoned my home on Friday despite my request for them to contact me at work.

He left a message telling me to try unplugging the sky box and I was unable to tell him that I'd already tried that. (It's one of the first thing that BT Broadband asked me to try.

Phoned BT Broadband after hearing that but they said it's currently out of their hands and I needed to speak with BT Wholesale (and they're only open Mon-Fri 9am-5pm). However, they said phone if it wasn't sorted by tomorrow.

At least with this new modem (Safecom 5-port) I've not found myself constantly being disconnected, actually managed to get through Shanessa's recent ML9 raid without LDing once.
