well, as we enter a format war, which side do you find yourself drawn to? the more expensive but larger capacity blu-ray or the cheaper, lower capacity, but also earlier available, and more easily backwards compatible with dvd hd-dvd format?

Bit of light reading

Just as a note, microsoft have obviously backed hd-dvd with there xbox360 where as sony have gone for the blu-ray alternative with there new playstation, which was set to be the big entrance of blu-ray into the market, but has now been pushed backed even further, giving microsoft the current market advantage.

dunno how to do polls :(

HD-DVD has already won tbh. If they would have been released at the same time it could have gone either way but frankly Blu-Ray has had a false start and won't catch up anymore.

HD-DVD is out in the next couple of weeks over here (afaik) already out in the US and Japan, blue ray is still some time away. the only thing that could have come anywhere near to saving blue ray in PS3 and that has been pretty much killed off by sony.

Every time you buy from Sony, Odin kills a kitten. True.

Goddamnit! Odin is a god of justice and not a killer...it's Thor or ares who kills a kitten, thinking it's thor since kittens live on earth and ares couldn't be arsed.

About the discs...dunno anything about a bluray, can't say.

in my opinion blu-ray is the better technolog, but I won't go for neither unless the DRM is cracked...

Blu-Ray has already failed, for a start only Sony have actually released a stand-alone player besides the PS3 and no company has actually even given it any interest as far as movies go whilst HD-DVD already has a fairly large amount of backing.

Blu-ray has in theory got more potential, but lacks serious support... not exactly cheap either

Blu-Ray for me as i think the ps3 will eventually be the future of gaming :) When super computers start using games consol processors they must be doing something right.

Seems things have been moving along since the last time I read MCV at work then, aren't the disks planning on being about £10-£20 a pop though? If thats the case not only will the PS3 being expensive, the games will most likely be £60 and above then, most new games around now seem to hit the £40-£50 right away generally.

I still question Sony's judgement on the fact that they think it's ok to pump out such high cost stuff, it really seems they're aiming for the "More money than sense" market which will in the end cost them a lot more since the supply will end up outweighing the demand as they will no doubt have overshot how many they think they'll sell. :p

Pre Order games are at £49.99 on ps3 on play.com anyway but blnak media i have seen for between £15 and £20 yeah very expensive. Sony say the reason for the blu ray is simple future proff gaming 26gb game disks. The 360 will prolly get the same of course but that will be a hardware upgrade you will have to buy. I think im one of the only prople that think £500 for a PS3 is fine when you think a PS2 is what 7 years old now? If the PS3 lasts that long with everything it dose i think its a bargin :)

Discs?

Hopelessly outdated already.

Sadly selling discs makes more profit for publishers than an internet based distribution straight to hard disk service would, Valve & Vivendi anyone?

Eh? What have you been smoking Soze? Name me any supercomputer that uses CELL? A dual core X86 processor will match any current version of the CELL and the quad cores coming next year will wipe the floor with it for general computing. CELL is a one trick pony as it stands, it's SPE are very much suited to media streaming and little else, the lack of branch prediction is a very serious problem when it comes to running actual code. However as I said, nothing will touch a CELL for media streaming but it doesn't really benefit games much apart from video playback and is useless for running any application that isn't media streaming related.

Bill Gates?

I love this console war, everyone knows the PS3 will be more popular when it comes out... Doubt is fun.

So what, MS have the money - Sony know people will stay dedicated after 3 years.

I can only say that these people are sadly misguided... ps3 is an overhyped peice of shit and I can tell you now that it wont live up to these misguided peoples expectations but they will still shell out a small fortune to own one.

I never mentioned anything about money, and I doubt it has anything to do with the fact that the whole ps3 developement process has been paved by lie after lie.

The people behind the PS3 couldn't even think up any original features, that the previous generation of XBOX didn't already have.

IBMs new supper computer Roadrunner will be using Cell processors and i have said it befor and ill say it again im very happy with the playstations so i will contiue to buy them and i really don't understand all the sony bashing lately and i don't think i ever will.

http://news.zdnet.co.uk/0,39020330,39282801,00.htm

And i say ps3 is the future because of its power that games today will not be able to tap meaning that year after year games will get better and better. I will not say anything about what the ps3 can do untill i have one so know fact from fiction but if rumors are true it will be a pvr something the xbox wants to do but will have to charge you to buy a upgrade again.

Hang on a second, Roadrunner is theoretical, it hasn't yet been built because the CELL BE hasn't even been finally developed and it is massively different from the CELL processor in the PS3. The true performance cant yet be measured because final silicon doesn't exist and again it CELL BE differs massively from CELL PS3 anyway so it won't be a true reflection of the PS3 CELL.

Also let me add this, there are masses of supercomputers based on the PowerPC 970 which is the design the X360 CPU was hybridised off, if CELL PS3 can be claimed to be a supercompter cpu then the X360 certainly can as there are actual machines right now running on PowerPC 970.

Oh and one more thing, Roadrunner uses AMD Opteron processors to do the generalised workload. The CELL BE is only used for specialist functions that it's fixed branch design can cope with. It isn't as if the CELL is running the operating system and performing generalised functions.

Im not going to pretend i know everything about cell processors but when the bbc and other news sites credit cell prosseors to the ps3. Roadrunner will start to ship this year if you read the bbc artical.

And i will also not join the sony hate bandwagon i think its say how much people say they hate the ps3 and how it will be crap at everything they say it can do when no one has tried one. I own a 360 and maight buy a Wii at christmas time but i will damn sure buy a ps3 next year too.

But back on topic i do not plan to buy either a Blu Ray Player or a HD DVD as i dont fancy replacing my dvd collection I will only try Blu Ray as that ships with the ps3
