a little bit of this, and a little bit of that. the industry sounds like a lot of bi-sexual prostitutes clustered round the ones with the biggest strap-ons :/

I didn't say HD-DVD is consumer friendly, just that it's more consumer friendly than blu-ray, although I suppose it's a bit like a choice between Kang and Kodos!

As for paramount switching to blu-ray, that's already been refuted by paramount: Bloomberg.com: Japan

That may well be so but they could just be saying that. I bet they will switch at some point.

Paramount to back out of Toshiba's HD-DVD | Technology | The Guardian

I can't see HD-DVD getting the upper hand over blu-ray now.

Until Paramount say "we're ditching HD-DVD", then I'm inclined to go with the reports that they aren't budging.

Fuck sake, just go to blu-ray and stop this fucking annoying faff k thx. The sooner it's the standard, the sooner we can start lining the walls of Blockbuster and HMV with blu-ray discs.

I'm not moving to a 1080p projector until there is a decent amount of content out there.

People dont seem to realise that if Blue-ray wins we could see a big price increase. Atm they already expensive in the shops and thats with them having to compete with HD. Hopefully im wrong but we will see.

Nonsense. Prices are high because there's no economy of scale because penetration is too low. The quicker you get to one platform the quicker you restore consumer confidence so they start buying players. Then you get more retailers actually stocking BluRay films which stimulates price competition. Its only when something becomes truly mass market that you get competitive pressure and lower prices.

Tripe.

What Gaff said.

Anyone remember when you could first buy VHS tapes in the likes of Virgin Megastore? £70 a pop, didn't last :).

Even with the prices as high as they are you can still find offers like buy 2 get 1 free at places like Tesco, HMV and Play so its works out at £12 a disc, they are just putting huge markups on them because its a small market atm, when the market grows prices will come down and having just one format will help it to grow.

Agreed. There is only 1 DVD market, no competition yet the price is next to nothing due to retailer competition.

Bring on the releases, can't wait to get some decent quality content :)

Imo it was over when Matsushita and Sony teamed up on this, just after effects now.

The hollywood studios behave like strippers, they have to get paid to show some content, amazing. I wouldn't mind if the whole hollywood goes down due to the WGA strike, then I can enjoy some good French or Korean movies as blockbusters :).

Then again I'd have to learn Korean and French to enjoy the movies fully, fuck that, Hollywood forever!

It did for video shops.

Right up until the retail release of dvd's and videos at the same time as rental we were paying around £50 a tape/dvd. Obviously if you were Blockbuster or Choices or any of the huge global companies you could get them for pennies on revenue share and just return them when they had finished renting.

Warner were the main ones to put the 'not for rental' messages on the beginning of retail dvds, they release the rental and retail at the same time, rental cost around £50 and retail around £12, exactly same film, exactly same disc (in many cases the retail had more features) and they roped in another whore (F.A.C.T) to do their dirty work if you were caught renting retail discs. I reported a known pirate to F.A.C.T and they did absolutely fuck all, if they knew I had rented retail discs my business would of been closed down.....and I had, its all I bought.....since I owned video shops I never bought 1 rental disc or video ever, it was the only way I could stay in business.

I honestly hope Hollywood disappears up its own arse, I hope the writers strike forever.
