peeplets, a question here [in an unprecedented serious post by me heh].

I seem to remember a time when people got together to play games and have fun. everybody got along with everyone else, and all was good.
now I see strange things happening everywhere, actions taken purely to get on the tits of others, people reacting violently when their doings are questioned, cheats reaching new depths, games no longer being fun to play online.

so....have we indeed lost a part of out precious gaming spirit? that would be a sad day indeed.
answers go below...

Is this post in reaction to what happened in the SoF forum?

a bit. it's also more: for some time now I've been watching peeps complain about spammers, cheaters, acme bad guys. I've also watched peeps talk about rising everyday theft/violence/vandalism irl.
when we had our little invasion, culminating in what just happened in the sof forum I thought about it for a bit and then decided to post this. I feel the need to hear the thoughts of others if you will.

The HL/TFC/CS forum is a right state - almost every thread is about cheating in some way.

The Jolt vs. BW thing seems to happen regularly

It has to be said that it appeared that the "aggression'o'meter' was in the red for a while there, and basically for no real reason. OK, so some guy was spamming like there's no tommorrow, but it was in a forum which is, lets be honest here not highly used, and he wasnt really doing a great deal of harm to anyone.

I fail to see what he was trying to achieve tbh, a high post count? so?. Then some other Jolters came to join in and I think once the flames started it seemed that some ppl (myself included) jumped on the band wagon and started having a go (bit like in the pole tax riots, that was sooooo much fun, like a kind of scary fun)

Like (i think it was Summo) said, were all gamers, so lets just relax, play our games, and chat. Nicely. About games. And stuff.

Ya know?
:)

As with most arguments on the net - the source of the conflict was small and quickly forgotten, but the flames still get fanned

Takes a little longer on the forums - its good on IRC though :)

It's the internet.

It gives the 'billy-no-mates' of this world a chance to talk big loud and dirty, and make up for their pathetic RL existence.

Just laugh at them, and then add in a little pity.

OK, I may have been guilty of unnecessary flaming in the past, but in the new thread started by the guy who first spammed up the SoF forum, I explained in the fullest possible way why I got annoyed at his antics. The post is here.
Online gaming is a source of both socialising and recreation, as is using the forums. In this aspect, they are very much alike.
Unfortunately in both situations, there are people who take the privilege of free speech, and have a laugh at the cost of others' annoyance. Such people include those who use cheats on game servers, or post excessive spam in forums, for instance.

People need to settle on a compromise. Have fun, enjoy themselves, but don't piss off others in the process; try to act mature in heavier disagreements, and contain themselves in light-hearted discussion or banter. I can name TDC and Someguy outright, as two examples of highly frequent posters in this forum, who act both mature AND know how to make the forum a welcoming/entertaining place to hang out in.

When people fuck about, people aren't gonna like it, and they won't put up with it, which is how flamewars result.

I think thats a bit of an unfair stereotype. Although it may apply to lots of users the internet is mainstream.

Speaking to many of the ppl here and in IRC most are geeks (heavily involved in the IT industry or studying it). However we are all normal and have a RL social life

the world as we know it is and always has been full of the lowest form of life, humans.

it's just easier for them to get online these days unfortunately.

as for the real world, it always stank

Yoo tryin' to start a flamewar huh? ;)

Of course I didn't mean everybody! But the Internet does, by it's anonymous nature, allow things to be said that people wouldn't dream of saying in real life.

Scenario.......

Two guys sitting in a pub, one says
"I like the sound of that new pentium 4"
Suddenly a stranger pipes up,
"What are you, a fucking retard? Any gormless twat knows the Athlon blows the P4 into the weeds"

Polite titters all round (or not, if it's my local!)

Yeah - definatly

Its interesting what happens when real life collides with gaming - eg at LAN Parties. You don't get any flamewars there - I wonder why :D

because irl peeps have to cope with their deeds. iow, one can't just fade and come back with a different alias when there are people standing next to you.

I think it's alot easier to misconstrue things on the net because you can't get any tone. So innocent or joking statement "a" can be read as inuslting statement "b" resulting in an argument out of nowhere. I've done it myself, read something innocent as a personal affront and reacted wrongly to it, and I'm sure a fair few of you have too. Maybe we should put stage directions next to everything, or narrate it like a bad detective movie, I suggested in a semi serious way. The others were looking at me strangely, so I moved swiftly on...

It's also about ettiquette too I guess. If someone icq's me ALL IN CAPITALS, I put them on ignore. Pretty much straight away. And by the same measure I think making a thread purely for yourself, for you to type repeated messages consisting of just numbers or one word, is pretty rude. If I did that I'd expect to get flamed for it. A message board is for communicating with other people, if you want to just type to yourself you have Word on your computer. Admittedly, this whole "I hope you fall on a large stick and rip your colon out you fuck fuck" is a little extreme for my tastes, I'm a scalpel rather than gullotine girl, but hell, I'm as rude in real life as I am online. Maybe less so, cos in real life words just seem to bypass the brain and leap straight into action.

Hmm... can't comment here, really as I've only been playing online games for as long as I've been registered with BW, since June last year.

From my point of view its got better over this period, though.

I used to be a UT man and often played with a clan and people I knew in real life, it was an amazing experience back then. Using roger wilco to sing along, battling through the depths of league/ladder tables. However, mid-last year I left UT and have not returned, I found the surrounding community was becoming a bunch of egotistical bastards. The very essence of team/gaming spirit, which to me was the whole fun, had disappeared. It became too competitive and people were just playing to win and notch up a rank of respect on the much acclaimed 'egotistical bastards ladder'.

However, nostalgia can be a dangerous thing, the grass is greener and all that. I do find though, right through from my first days on tfc, the best games where team and gaming spirit still come alive, are often with people you know, either online or off. Imo, it enriches the game experience beyond comprehension, knowing that you can have a good old rant about the match afterwards, and i've even talked about in depth UT matches at the pub with my on/offline mateh.

You hadn't noticed? Online Gaming has been in the decline for the past 2 years.

heh, they were amongst the first to go. Wireplay UT was a prime example of this, being so full of arrogant fucknuts who couldn't take a joke, whom couldn't see past their shit scripts and anal attitudes to see that the game was predominately flawed, in that it was designed for newbies with spam in mind.

They didn't like being told that :(
They threw me off the forums :/
Jesus fucking H christ it was funny though.
